No words yet, anyone else?

I know this is just like the "OMG, he still isn't crawling at 6 months old!" posts that drive us all bonkers, but I can't help myself. Anna still doesn't say any words. She babbles a lot, but has never said a 'word' and connected it with a person/object. She waves and can do the sign for 'all done' if you ask her, so it seems like she understands words, just doesn't say anything.

Anyone else's LO still not have any words? This is the first time I'm stressing that she is slow on meeting a milestone, don't know what it is about this one that has me worried...

Liam isn't saying many words. Really all he says consistently is 'this' which can mean 'I want this' or 'what is this'. He does say mama and dada but it's still a string of those sounds instead of the short word. I do worry about his lack of words, but I'm trying not to freak out. I plan on bringing up my concerns at his 15 month appointment if he doesn't start talking more by then.

I have noticed that Liam works on his physical milestones more than his verbal. He's also trying to figure out how things work and you can tell that he's trying to work out solutions in his head to obstacles he comes across. Have you noticed anything like that with Anna? Maybe she prefers to work on other types of milestones rather than on talking?

@hijinx  I like what you're saying!  I see T really concentrating on other things.  He can sit and look at a book for much longer than I thought a 1 year old could.  He loves to figure things out, and often doesn't want me to intervene. And sometimes he's just too busy dancing to want to anything else.  I love when he dances.
I had never thought of it that way. She does seem to be doing a lot more 'problem solving' lately, like trying to get a sock on her foot or get her duplo blocks to stick together. She would much rather do that then sit and play or read a book with me.

@jfresh - 5 words by 15 months?! That seems like an impossibility to me at this point, but I guess a lot can change in two months? Our pedi said something similar that she should have one word by 12 months and that we could talk about it again at 15 months. Do you know what the next step would be? Speech therapy? Early intervention?

  • None here still.  Connnnnnstant babble and clearly understanding but nothing concrete as a "first" for the baby book.  I am not worried, though I AM greatly looking forward to it because it is so fun once it starts.  But she is an expert walker (can run, even) and climbs and her motor skills are where she excels so I know it's just a matter of time.

  • No words yet here either, except for uh oh. We actually have an appt today with his pedi to check his hearing. The pedi was a little concerned at his 1 year appt, and wanted me to call back at 13 months if he still wasn't talking by then. So, here we are.

I know a lot of people say not to worry at this point, but I understand how hard that can be. Hang in there!

  • Two words here, I think... haha! Hard to tell sometimes. He is trying though and he knows what words mean. If I ask him to put something I'm a bucket our something, he does it. Stuff like that. Our pedi said if he doesn't have three words by 15 months (he had none last month) she would refer to speech therapy but I think that's ridiculous and I wouldn't take him until probably closer to two years if he still isn't saying much. I honestly believe he is just stubborn and knows he doesn't HAVE to talk to get what he needs, so he doesn't!

  • All our "words" sound like the same word.  So there's that.  He does say Dada, but he says it to everyone!

It's really hard not to worry, especially when other kids are making such leaps and bounds.  I don't have advice, but I can commiserate.
You're not kidding.  Mine talks up a storm, but is just grasping the concept of a straw cup and suddenly hates even attempting to walk.  They all do things on their own timing and we'll eventually level out!

  • We have a vague similarity to words, she says "Dis" and "Dat" and has mamamamamama and dadadadada but she's not directing those at anyone really yet. For cat we have "Ka" and dog is "Da", and everything else is "Bah!" We're working more on motor skills right now I think though.

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.

  • This has made me feel so much better. I feel really irrational worrying about it anyway, but it really helps to see that lots of others are in the same place that we are. I'm going to try to focus on the positive - that she is understanding and comprehending.

I just talked to my mom about it and she said her grandma always used to say "We can't wait until babies can walk and talk - and then we tell them to sit down and be quiet." So maybe I should be happy she is taking her sweet time :)

  • V does not say words yet. She was saying mama and tata for dad, but then regressed and stopped :(

She say aw-aw to imitate the dog, not sure its counts as a word though...

I am not worried because I had the same worries with my sons and they turned out good :) especially my second son - he is one talkative little fellow.

Riley says a word or two here and there, but nothing consistent. For example, she said "shoe" (more like "do") on Saturday one time, but then never again. She says "up" here and there, but only occasionally, same with "dog". She'll babble mamamama and dadadada, but doesn't say the specific words. She points a lot and understands what I'm saying (I'll ask for a hug and she'll give me one) but nothing else.

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. I know Riley is on the cusp of saying a bunch of things, it just takes time. Hang in there!

This is just like my LO. She also babbles up a storm, but no other words other than "mama" and "dada". At our 1 year appt, our ped said that is completely normal (although of course I still worry, lol).

  • Robert says mama and dada pretty consistently, but has only said a few other words once or twice. He has said doggie twice, hi a few times, and no a few times. he babbles a lot. Our doctor said 5-10 words by 15 months.

  • DD doesn't say any English words really...but she says "Ah-Dah" whenever she points at something she is interested in (the dogs, trees, the tv etc).  So that obviously means something to her.

She also says "A-nah" when she wants something...Ana is the name of the dayhome owner, lol.  She doesn't call her "Ana" but says that when she is upset about something...she must have learned from the older kids when they call for Ana.

She waves and points at things and communicates in her own way but no clear words yet.

  • No words here yet. He will say uh oh , but that's it. I'm not too worried at this point because I know he's advancing in other areas. He is always figuring out new things physically, just no words yet. My SD didn't say much until she was two. It pretty much sounded like she was speaking Chinese until one weekend it just clicked and she was talking up at storm. Try not to worry about it too much, it will come!

  • Adelia doesn't say any word either, but boy does she love to hear herself talk. She does Mama and Dada, but she doesn't associate it with anyone either. She just finally started clapping her hands this past Saturday and I was freaking out about that too. Her doc never seems worried though.
