The cervix feels like a PENIS!

I posted a very abbreviated version of this in the comments of another thread yesterday but thought I might as well expand it into a whole post. Why? Because I'm avoiding a work deadline. :)

If you're having trouble checking CP, texture, or CM, stop listening to people who compare the cervix to noses and lips. Anatomically, its male counterpart is the penis. If you have ready access to a penis, observe it in its 3 stages -- hard, semihard, and flaccid. Stare at it and observe its shape. Poke at it with your finger. Feel the divot at the tip where the pee hole is (don't shove your finger in there; you have been warned). See how different that hole feels during each of the three stages of firmness.

Then spend some time perusing the Beautiful Cervix site (educational, not pornographic, but still NSFW), particularly the cycle galleries. Also take a look at the Your Cycle page.

Now, wash your hands with soap and water, pull down your panties, and sit on the toilet. Insert the index finger or middle finger of your dominant hand into your vagina. Gently push it back, in the same direction you'd insert a tampon, but do not veer off to the front, back, or side, and do not press against the vaginal walls. Depending on where you are in your cycle, you should bump into a wet, fleshy knob. A knob that feels like...well, a knob (in the British sense). This is your cervix.

First thing to note: how quickly did you bump into it? Did you hit it in half a finger's length? Did you hit it once your finger was almost all the way in? Or are you knuckle-deep and still barely able (or unable) to even tickle the tip? This is cervical position. Low, medium, high, respectively.

Now, again, depending on where you are in your cycle, the texture of this protrusion should fit into one of the following categories:

FIRM: feels like a hard penis, and the hole will be closed tight (especially if you've never had a term pregnancy).
MEDIUM: feels like a semi, and the hole will usually be somewhere in between, since medium is a transitional position.
SOFT: feels like the tip of a flaccid (limp) penis, and the hole will usually be loose and open.

Now, while you're in there, quickly run the tip of that finger across the opening again, then up and around the outer edges of the cervix (let's call that space the "moat"). When you bring your finger out, observe the fluid on it. After you've checked your cervix for an entire cycle or two, you'll notice that the amount and texture of the fluid (cervical mucus) that comes out of it also corresponds to where you are in your cycle and the texture of your cervix. You can Google cervical mucus if you dare (some of the pics are pretty gross, I'll admit), but for the most part this is cervical fluid in order of least to most fertile:

DRY: feels dry. There's not much fluid to speak of at all. Finger insertion might be uncomfortable.
STICKY: is still pretty dry, but might have little sticky flecks of creaminess that cling like paste when you put your fingers together and then pull them back apart.
CREAMY: varies in thickness and wetness but usually looks and feels somewhat like lotion. It has a smoother, silkier feel when you rub your fingers together, and it doesn't stick or stretch when you put them together and pull them back apart.
WATERY: wet and watery, just as it sounds. It may leave a mark in your undies that looks like water has spilled. It's not sticky, though it may have globs of EW fluid in it.
EGGWHITE: may be clear or cloudy, but can be identified by its stretch. It will stretch an inch or more when you put your fingers together and then pull them back apart. It may be copious, or there may be clumps of it mixed in with creamy or watery fluid. If it comes from deep within (unlike arousal fluid, which comes from very close to the outside of the vulva) and it stretches, it is EW.

You're now done checking your cervical position, texture, and fluid. Pull up your pants and wash your hands, then record your findings.

Once you've spent a cycle or two checking your cervix, you'll see how all these things fit together, and you'll realize that even though cervical texture, position, and fluid can vary somewhat throughout the cycle, they will generally follow a very predictable pattern around the days that matter, namely the week surrounding ovulation. The more regular and predictable your cycles, the fewer days you actually need to check cervical signs, since they'll only serve to confirm what you already know about your body. In fact, at some point you might decide that it's more helpful to avoid checking the cervix anytime except just before your FW and then again toward the end of the 2WW, since it doesn't really mean much throughout the rest of the cycle.

Those are the basics. Hope they help! Let me know in the comments if I've missed anything super important.

[Disclaimers: I am not a doctor. I don't even play one on TV. I do, however, edit romance novels, which are full of glaring proof that women don't understand their bodies, and that's a shame. Obviously everybody (and every body) is different, and there are exceptions to every rule. Check out the TTGP newbie blog, FF tutorials, and many other great sites for more helpful info. YMMV. Do not touch penises without permission. If touching your cervix squicks you out, you might want to take this into consideration as you continue TTGP. Once you get KU, your life becomes all about your lady parts, and a lot of people will be seeing them and touching them and tearing them into shreds, so your life will be much easier if you desensitize yourself to it early.]

  • This was amazing.  And I'm glad I'm not the only one who likens the feel of the cervix to that of the penis!

  • When I first started charting and learning how to check CM and CP, I found the beautiful cervix project site and found it highly enlightening. I never had a clue about my cervical, what it looked like or how it acted, and I was shocked to see what you've said here, that it really is like the head of a penis. It makes sense really. Just goes to show how much is lacking in public sex Ed. This, along with how to chart and figure out your cycles, should be something every girl is taught!

  • This is the reason I prefer TB over any other baby site. You ladies are honest!

I've not been brave enough to check CP yet, not sure if I ever will. But at least I understand what I'm looking for now.

    Thanks @jenbarker99!

I agree. I hate that I didn't know a thing about my cervix till I was almost 30. It's so simple, really, and once you figure it out, so many things about the menstrual cycle and the female body in general just click into place.

  • @jenbarker99 I just called my husband and told him I have to feel his penis when I get home because a girl on the bump told me to. He wanted me to tell you you're his hero.

Sidenote, I really wish I could quote from my phone. Or that my boss wasn't monitoring our internet activity.
