So I am new to this name board and I see our top name, Hazel (which is also a family name) mentioned on here a lot. I am due soon and having second thoughts about using this name for a variety of reasons. After doing some more research, I also found that it is particularly popular in the city I live in, ranking 57/100 last year! Then, I saw that the movie "Fault in Our Stars" will be released in a couple years which I think could affect its popularity too even though it is a movie geared towards YA. The main characters name is Hazel.
None of my friends or family have used the name but some of my friends in my city know one or two and I do hear it more when I am out and about. I can't decide if I just use the name we love or let it go. It just seems like it is getting popular really fast and I know names can be more popular regionally too...
Re: A name that is trending or popular right now that is our top pick
Hazel is trending right now, but IMO (and I am no expert) it's a little bit too quirky to become as universally popular as Emma, Sophia, Olivia etc.
I think you are fine.

I think we are definitely in a trend of "old lady" names right now and Hazel is surely one of those but I don't see it cracking top 20 or anything like that.
btw I adore Hazel!
I'm sure you've seen this, but I'll post it for the benefit of other PPs.
Like HelenaHandbasket already said, I don't know if I expect it to skyrocket the way other names have.
FYI---I don't know any any babies or children with the name.
I had a great-grandma named Hazel though.
You are allowed to care! I do too.

Other names I love but aren't considering for various reasons: Vivienne and Greta.
Are you pregnant right now? TTCing?
This whole popularity thing is something you may have to wait out. I am NOT pregnant, and having children is never a given, so even if I get to have kids 5 years from now, all the names I love may somehow skyrocket to popularity and then I may rethink them. It's hard to say. For example, a family name that I love, Julia, is already more popular than I'd prefer, but maybe it won't be in several years. I don't know.
I can't imagine having a lot of little Hazels in one class, but then again, I don't live where you do. Here, she'd likely be the only one.
FYI--I love Vivienne.
estreyas--I've read the book
Oh, okay. Then nevermind. This baby is on her way!
I could be wrong, but when I think of too-popular names, Hazel isn't on my radar. Of course, the whole book-being-released-soon thing could affect it, like you said. I don't know.
I don't feel like Hazel would become super-popular, it doesn't seem to have the same feel as the other top 10 names, kwim? I think it would appeal to a smaller group of people than names like Sophia and Isabella but I do understand what you mean about it being popular in your city.
Personally I would go for it if you don't get the same feelings towards your other name choices - although Willa is super cute!
I am doing the same thing watching Eloise climb, I don't know where my comfort level is in the rank. Parker came off of our list not only because of where it ranked in our city and the country but because of how popular it became in our circle of friends.
