Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

birthday party and nap timing

DD turns 2 next month and we've been talking a little about her party lately.  It's just going to be close family - DH and I, both sets of Grandparents, DH's aunt, and DH's cousin's family.  Last year her party was at our house with the same group, and I think that's all we're doing this year too.

It occurred to me yesterday that DD generally naps from about 1:00 until about 4:00 (give or take an hour either way).  That's prime birthday party time!  So we could either have her party in the late afternoon or in the morning, like a brunch.  I'm leaning toward a brunch, then we're not cutting into folks' Saturday nights, and everything will be done by early afternoon.  Plus, we have a lot of woods around our house and it gets a little buggy out in the yard in the late afternoon.  Is that weird, to have a kid's birthday party at 10:30 in the morning?

Re: birthday party and nap timing

  • It's close family so just do what works for DDs schedule. A party is fun for no one with a cranky baby. Honestly you could even have the party start at 10:30 then around 11 or 11:15 pull out the food for an early lunch if you'd rather serve lunch foods. And just have fruit platters on the tables or what not for when the party starts. This is what we did for LO's 1st bday (just close family for us too), we did party at 11, food at 11:30. Worked great around her naps.

I'd way rather have a Saturday early party enjoy the nice weather than starting at 4/5 and going late.

  • Completely agree.
    Second Birthday Brunch sounds cool!
Plus, who doesn't love pancakes and birthday cake. Sounds like the best birthday ever!

  • We did a first birthday brunch this past year. I made some breakfast casseroles, fruit trays, etc. It was awesome and I"m pretty sure the family appreciated having the party out of the way to leave their evening free.

I love morning birthday parties and we always start DS's at 10am and serve an early lunch at 11-12.   My kids wake me up at 6am everyday.  I always think it is weird when people say that it is early.  10am and my day is half over, lol!
  • echo others, go early. my son's first birthday party was at 11 to work around his naps. anyone who thinks it's weird prob doesn't have kids.
