HELP! I need to give up my apartment

So now that my little one is in there his daddy wants me to give up my apartment and move in with him. I have to say it is clearly the logical thing to do seeing as the money I spend to rent this place can now be saved for the baby! The problem is my lease isn't up until a week before my EDD and I'm not sure It'll be easy to break it without serious penalties. Any advice? Anyone?

Re: HELP! I need to give up my apartment

  • First check your lease for specifics.  It could be you would only have to pay a penalty to break the lease, which might be a lot less than continuing to pay rent for 7 more months.  If not, then perhaps there is a possibility to sublet?   Or if the apartment complex you are in has a waiting list, there might not be any problem breaking your lease at all.

You might even consider if would be easier/less expensive for your partner to break HIS lease and move in with you.   It's worth looking into.

That would NOT work.... I live in basically a bachelorette pad. Small space that only me and my dog can live in while he lives in an ideal environment for bringing home baby: 2 bedroom 2 bath house with a yard in a quiet neighborhood. Yea... I gotta give my place up lol

No worries, just a suggestion in case it could work either way :-)

  • I would just check the policy. I am sure you can get out of it for a fee, or two months rent, etc. Good luck!

I broke my lease to move in with my SO a while back.  I had to refer to my lease to see what my options were.  I was fortunate enough to have 4 options -- the first was to completely abandon the unit which would show up on my credit in a bad way, lose deposit, etc etc.  2 - sublet the unit, where I would still be responsible if the subletee didn't pay rent or damaged the unit.  3 - re-let the unit where I would be completely released from the unit and the new renter would continue the lease until my original lease date ended, with option to renew. 4- I would have to pay 4 months of my rent to leave the unit in good standing.  This was per Chicago city ordinance, which the landlord company had to enforce.

My experience was this -- I went for option #3.  At first, I left my unit furnished and would show it to people, had a lot of bites but a lot of people would say "I need to move in this weekend" which I needed at least 2 weekends to get organized and move.  This prompted me to move all my stuff out and in with my SO (since I was going to move there anyway) and I left my unit vacant and just paid my rent and turned off the utilities.  I then advertised on CL as "unit available NOW" and I had people chomping at the bits and had a renter sign right away and move in, and I was completely released.  It was great.

  • My husband and I took over a lease from someone from CL. It has worked out great! We saved money and the previous renters gave us $1000 to take over the lease. (This was essentially much cheaper than paying a lease break of $3000!!!) we did thix to save money for a house, and now we are in escrow!! maybe you could work something out to sweeten the deal for another leasee. Just an idea, but finding someone to take over your lease can be a really great option if you can do it!
