So now that my little one is in there his daddy wants me to give up my apartment and move in with him. I have to say it is clearly the logical thing to do seeing as the money I spend to rent this place can now be saved for the baby! The problem is my lease isn't up until a week before my EDD and I'm not sure It'll be easy to break it without serious penalties. Any advice? Anyone?
Re: HELP! I need to give up my apartment
I broke my lease to move in with my SO a while back. I had to refer to my lease to see what my options were. I was fortunate enough to have 4 options -- the first was to completely abandon the unit which would show up on my credit in a bad way, lose deposit, etc etc. 2 - sublet the unit, where I would still be responsible if the subletee didn't pay rent or damaged the unit. 3 - re-let the unit where I would be completely released from the unit and the new renter would continue the lease until my original lease date ended, with option to renew. 4- I would have to pay 4 months of my rent to leave the unit in good standing. This was per Chicago city ordinance, which the landlord company had to enforce.
My experience was this -- I went for option #3. At first, I left my unit furnished and would show it to people, had a lot of bites but a lot of people would say "I need to move in this weekend" which I needed at least 2 weekends to get organized and move. This prompted me to move all my stuff out and in with my SO (since I was going to move there anyway) and I left my unit vacant and just paid my rent and turned off the utilities. I then advertised on CL as "unit available NOW" and I had people chomping at the bits and had a renter sign right away and move in, and I was completely released. It was great.
