Nap transition not by choice

DS is back with a sitter this week and I think the change and excitement if all the kids is causing him to take one 40 to 90 minute nap a day. He's was fine Monday and Tuesday but today was not so good. He was nonstop crying, passed out in my dog around 5:15, woke up at 5:44 crying nonstop and was in bed before 6:30. He's been taking 2 naps a day with first nap around 8:30 and second nap around 1:30 both lasting 1.5 to 2 hours each. I'm going to bring his white noise machine tomorrow and ask the sitter if he's in the quietest room and make sure she tries to put him down earlier since she's been getting him down around 12. Any other suggestions? It's an in home sitter who watches other children too. Also would you ladies try to keep the normal nap schedule for the weekend or try to transition him to one nap even though I don't think he's ready? Thanks!

Re: Nap transition not by choice

  • DS rarely takes more than one nap at daycare and VERY rarely naps longer than an hour or so. But, at home he takes 2 naps for a total of 3-3.5 hours usually. He is in bed by 7-7:15 every night.

    Generally he's in a pretty good mood despite not napping well, though, if he didn't nap much or at all (yes, that happens) he usually doesn't eat well at dinner. The worst is when he's asleep when I pick him up. He just cries and cries.

    So...to answer that, DS moves to the next room on Monday and there's mandatory nap time in there once per day. I'll keep an eye on his cues to see if he's ready to do the same at home on the weekends, but I'm thinking the answer is no. He still takes a nap 2-3 hrs after waking up in the morning and then 3-3.5 after he wakes up from that nap.

  • Wow I just noticed my typos from autocorrect and my exhaustion! Sorry. Thanks for the insight. I hope he adjusts soon so he's a happy baby again. I don't get home until 5:45 so a 6:30 bedtime gives me no time with him :(( plus when all he does is cry from exhaustion for the 45 minutes its awful.
  • I would keep two naps on weekend s. Dd needs that time to catch up. She does ok with less napping during the week, but needs more on weekends.

    @amysmolos
    We only get home around 5:30 with a 7PM bedtime so I hear you on the no time together. If the lack of sleep is negatively affecting your time with him and you think it's feasible then I would definitely talk to her about putting him down early and with a white noise machine.
