Not impressed with my Doc

I'm so annoyed right now and I need to vent...please bear with me. After my dramatic week last week trying to get my pregnancy confirmed (results last Monday were negative but the office told me positive. I caught the mistake myself and had to tell them, then I had to wait until Friday for another test), I thought I was past all the hiccups and ready to get started.

They told me at the office that they were putting in a regerral for an u/s that day and ultrasound department would call me in two business days to set up the dating ultrasound, but if I hadn't heard from them by Wednesday or Thursday I needed to call them. Well I hadn't heard anything so I gave them a call, and guess what: no referral for me! They told me someone would call me by the end of the day tomorrow and hopefully get it straightened out and schedule me.

I'm not exactly brimming with confidence right now.

  • Don't be scared to switch doctors! I switched at 20 wks my first pregnancy.

  • Unfortunately DH is military and we use the on-base healthcare system. If I wanted to switch out to a civilian doctor I'd have to change to a completely different insurance plan that involves us paying a co-pay for care. It feels a little like I'm stuck. Yay for our tax dollars at work.

  • The girl I talked to today sounded very professional and like she was in the business of getting things done, so hopefully she will be on top of things, but you'd better believe that if I haven't heard from someone by mid afternoon tomorrow ill be making some calls of my own. My patience is wearing thin and I'm in the mood to get stuff done.

  • Don't be afraid to get bitchy. If your husband has any rank he can throw around to help, let him. I am the last person on earth who would typically say that, but I'm so disgusted with the military system right now that anything goes. If all else fails, remember: ICE comments carry a lot of weight and go straight to the top, and there's a patient advocate to help out in these types of situations. Good luck!
  • I'm with knstax ICE comments for sure! And don't be afraid to be pushy I think you should have a patient advocate on base, at least we do, if you're still having a lot of trouble i'd contact them
  • Please do not use your rank or your husband's rank to make things happen.  It's just not cool.   The military system is flawed, but being nasty to people and pulling rank will not win you any friends.

However you DO have to take complete ownership of your own care.  Get the number for referral management and call every day until you know your referral has gone through.  Once it's gone through call the radiology department (or OB department or whatever) until they get the referral on their end.  DO NOT accept the "We will schedule it and call you" answer -- call every number and make things happen yourself.  Be pleasant, get people's names, and write down every phone number they give you (even if they offer to patch you through, get the number so next time you don't have to wade through phone menus).  Thank people for their help.  Sometimes going in person is quicker, and sometimes the phone is quicker.

I know it can be frustrating sometimes...I've been through this a lot in the last few years with various health concerns for both my husband and for myself (he's a civilian and I'm AD).  Be polite but be persistent :-)
