Parenting after a Loss

Tummy time fail?

My almost 6 week old is terrible at tummy time.. he'll lay on his belly, but he doesn't lift his head!  He'll just plop it to one side or the other and just.. lay there!  I know he can lift his head, as he'll do it if I have him laying belly to belly on my chest.. but, lay him on the floor or propped up on the boppy and forget it.. he just keeps it in the same position!  Silly kid.. DS1 was way too nosy to not be lifting his head an looking around.. DS2, nah, he'd rather just "chill".  Anyone else have a lazy tummy time LO?  No reason to worry, right, since he will pick his head up fine when he's on my chest?

Re: Tummy time fail?

  • My son hated tummy time - but I think that had more to do with his constipation?  The softer the floor was (padding, pillows, etc.), the longer he'd tolerate it.  But he always did better with tummy time, if it was on my tummy for some reason (I'm assuming he's literally just enjoyed the squishy mess my tummy was after giving birth to him lol).

My pedi was fine with him practicing his tummy time on me, since his neck was nice and strong :)

  • My almost 10 week old, adjusted 5 week old is the same way. He does a great job on me, on the floor he lifts his legs and sometimes his lower belly. I keep telling him that's the wrong end but he doesn't listen.

  • DD2 is the same when flat on the ground. She does well on the Boppy and okay on my chest--I think she likes snuggles :)

  • Anna was the same way. We did a LOT of kangaroo care and she definitely had a strong neck, but when it was tummy time she just wanted to settle in and nap. Her PT had us put a rolled up receiving blanket under her pecs with her elbows in front of it. This lifted her up just a little bit and made her head kind of flop in a way that would bother her unless she picked it up.

  • I wouldn't worry about it at all. My DD hated it too and would only last a few minutes. She didn't get nearly the recommended amount. She's still reached all of her milestones and growing like a weed. He's proven to you that he can pick his head up, so when he's ready he'll do it during TT.
