Infertility

3% morphology- 1st post

Hello, everyone!  It still feels weird posting about this kind of stuff, but I figure there are a lot of people on here that can relate.  My husband and I started fertility testing last Wednesday.  So far, I have done two rounds of blood tests and 2 ultrasounds.  My results have been normal.  On Monday, I will be going in to do the HSG test.  My husband has also had a semen analysis done.  I am posting because today, the doctor's office called us with the results of his test.  His numbers were normal, except for the morphology.  The morphology result was 3%.  We are going tomorrow so that he can get another sample tested.  Just wondering if anyone has had experience with a 3% (or similar) morphology, what your next steps were, and also if anyone has had success with it.  Thanks! :)

We only have 1% morph. IVF was recommended since it's extremely difficult for abnormally shaped sperm to fertilize an egg. With that said 4% morph is normal, so 3% isn't that far off. I don't know your history, but I would ask about DNA sperm fragmentation too. They think it's a cause of unexplained IF since you can't identify sperm frag from a SA. GL

  • Thank you for the responses. If the morphology is still 3% tomorrow, then maybe I will ask about the DNA fragmentation.  I hadn't heard of that test before.

Smals... glad to hear that you were able to get pregnant with iui and a 3% morphology.  It seems like it is a low morphology but that there is definitely still reason to be positive.

  • My husband's most recent SA was 3% morph strict Kruger. His first was normal, but used WHO standards. We are doing IVF now, so my RE wasn't concerned.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • I've been trying to look online and it seems that a lot of people at 3% can still have success with IUI.  I think I'd rather start with that.  Did your doctor say anything about trying IUI or just go straight to IVF?

  • My husbands morphology was 2%, and then 1%, and IVF worked for us on the first try! I was really worried about it, but, it all worked out :-) Good luck!
  • My husband's morph was 1% but he had a very high count and good motility, so our RE said IUI was worth a shot.  Unfortunately, each IUI we did, his count got lower and lower and it just didn't make sense to keep trying IUI.  We moved on to IVF.

  • MH has 1% morph, count was OK, motility was up and down. My RE suggested that we try IUI (we had gotten pg twice prior to seeing RE, both of which resulted in losses). I think IUI is a reasonable starting point. Good luck!

  • ******Siggy Warning**********

I think 4% morphology is normal so DH is not that low.  My DH had 1% morphology but extremely high numbers.  Because of my issues, we did IUIs with injectibles and got pregnant with twins on the 3rd one.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. We should know in a couple days if the morphology is the same from the second sample. I will know better after my hsg, but sounds like iui will be where we start too.

  • I also don't think that 3% morphology sounds that bad. The lower limit on the Kruger strict scale is 4%. Did your RE mention the possibility for your DH to take supplements which might improve morphology? This might be another option to increase the chances of success with IUI. The good thing with IUI is that they are sometimes covered by insurance where IVF is not. This is the case with us, but unfortunately DH's 0% morphology rules out anything besides IVF with ICSI for us. Good luck, lady!

  • My husband just went to give a second sample today, to make sure the 3%.was correct, so they haven't suggested anything yet. I will definitely ask about supplements if they don't mention it. So far the office seems very helpful, so they most likely will. 3% is just before the cut off between normal/abnormal, and I've seen some say they have had success with lower morphology... So I think we will be ok :) thank you for responding! It is very helpful to hear from others on this stuff! You definitely learn as you go!

  • Pinkin provence... forgot to say congrats on your twins! I might be secretly hoping for twins as well... crazy as that sounds. Haha

  • Hsg test went well... Just have to wait to talk to the doctor, so we can decide on a course of action.
