She did it!!! (Sleep training success!)

DD was 27 weeks on Sunday.  Wonder week 26 shenanigans started closer to 25 weeks, so once we hit the 2 week mark of worse-than-usual sleep (lots of middle of the night wake-ups, and also waking up every 5-20 minutes for the first 2 hours of bedtime), and I was getting dangerously sleep deprived (and she wasn't getting enough sleep either, for that matter), I decided to give Ferber a shot.

The first two nights were a miserable failure, I think because I went modified Ferber and checked on her too frequently.  Me being there but not picking her up just made her really mad, and I eventually had to give in and pick her up to let her fall asleep on me because she'd been crying for longer than I was comfortable with. (Ultimately she slept fairly well both nights, 2 wake-ups the first night, and 1 last night, but I think that was because she was worn out from throwing tantrums.)

Anyway, tonight I decided to go with checks at 5, 10 and 15 minutes.  She fell asleep all by herself less than 5 minutes into the 15 minute interval!  A little longer than I'd like to hear her cry (just under 20 minutes total), but at least half of that was more fussing/whining than crying.  Though to be honest, the fussing was more heartbreaking. :-(

I still kind of hate that I had to resort to this, I'm generally not a fan of any kind of CIO method except as a last resort, but in the end I felt that letting her cry for a bit was better than the alternative of me falling asleep at the wheel while I was driving her somewhere.  :-\

Hopefully this will be the beginning of DD learning to soothe herself, which will hopefully also mean she starts STTN more frequently, or at least go back to her usual one MOTN feeding, which is what she's been doing for most of the last 2+ months. :-)

  • I so needed to hear this right now. We're about to do some sort of sleep training tonight and I'm super nervous.
  • So glad to hear of your success! I didn't want to do any sort of CIO either but we went through pretty much the exact experience you described. We also did a modified Ferber and it helped tremendously. I'm going back to work soon and I knew I couldn't be sleep deprived!

    Job well done Mama!

  • We're right there with ya. This week we had to pull out the big guns, and it's working better than expected! Keep your head up if it gets tough. I figure a couple hard nights of crying are far better than DS waking up 3-4 times each night crying.
