Two Under 2

Stroller question

So we are expecting #2 in Nov. ds will be 16 months when dd arrives. So my question for you mamas of 2 is do you thi a double stroller is necessary? Dh really doesn't want one because they are so bulky and I am on the fence. Ds is already walking and prefers to walk places now that's not always the quickest option or if we're at the zoo or something like that he will need breaks. Our thinking is to buy a new lightweight stroller I found one at target that could easily be interchangeable between both kids. It's a bassinet when laid down and a toddler seat when reclined up. So we are thinking we could get away with baby wearing and they could take turns in the stroller if need be and by the time dd is ready to be in a stroller full time ds will be into walking more. We don't use our stroller now that often. What do you ladies with experience think? Are we being crazy?

Re: Stroller question

  • My babies are 17 months apart. I think a double stroller is necessary. At the very least I would get a sit and stand. While DD prefers to walk, there are times when I need her to be strapped in.

My babies will be 15 months apart and just ordered the britax b ready. Its a single stroller that can turn into a double stroller when needed. Its also tandum which makes it less bulky in stores, on side walks, etc. If you dont want to shell out the money initially for one or want to wait you could always wear your youngest in a carrier and keep ur old single stroller and bring it just in case your older one wants to ride in it. We are going to sell our light weight Peg Perego single stroller that I love just because we don't need 3 strollers in our house.. We also have a schwinn double jogger. If you and your husband do decide to get one I would research and watch youtube videos by Holly Schultz from babygizmo.com. She talks really fast but i've found all of her videos to be helpful in our decision. Good luck!
  • If you are ever going to go out with both of them by yourself, you want a double stroller.  It's so much more important to be able to have at least 1 kid strapped in.  When DS is walking... I'm never going to let either of them out when I am alone!  It's just impossible to move quickly when your older one is walking too.  If you work FT and you rarely go out with the kids by yourself, you might be able to get away with it but for us, it's an absolute necessity.  For long days like the zoo or a n amusement park, you are definitely going to want a double.  I like babywearing but it's hot where we live and I don't like having to wear DS all the time.

For your info - I have had an Uppababy Vista, Bumbleride Indie Twin, Valco Snap Dual, BOB Duallie, Bugaboo Bee, Cybex Onyx, and a Britax B-ready.  I also use a City Mini GT at my mom's house.  Hahaha I love strollers.

  • I think baby wearing and a single stroller is a perfectly fine option. If you decide you need a double stroller later, you can always get one. For the first year of my son's life, I did not have a double and it worked well for me.

Hahaha I love to try new things out.  I tend to buy used or at a really good price, try it out for awhile then sell if I don't love it.

  • For the ladies that baby wear I'm curious what you do when LO #2 is asleep is the car seat. My two will be 20 months apart and I will have to pick my step daughters up from school everyday which involves going into school. I thought I'd be fine with wearing LO #2 and have DS in the stroller, but I'm wondering if its worth the hassle to get her in the Ergo vs snapped into a double stroller.

I babywear a good amount but this reason, in addition to it being 100 outside for 4 months a year, is why I needed a double stroller.

My boys are 19 months apart. To get into get them safely into daycare, I just use my single Snap N Go and let DS1 "help" push. I have carriers and double strollers but that is by far the easiest way.

I agree. I love to baby wear but it's hot right now. Plus I like to go for long walks (60-90 min) so a double is a must.

We also have the B Ready - love that it can be either a double or a single so we only have to pack one stroller. My SIL uses hers all the time for her two that are 20m apart. The older uses the bottom seat and climbs in and out of it depending on if she wants to walk or ride.

  • mine are 16 months apart and i can't even imagine not having a double stroller. DS1 prefers to walk but there are def times when i need him in the stroller. DS2 is in the ergo sometimes, but i find it easier to bring him in car seat/stroller and then take him out if i want to hold him/carry him. we use city select.

  • I'm due in Nov as well, and I can't imagine not having a double stroller in place.  I plan on walking to help heal from my c-section AND to help drop baby weight, and a double stroller will be a must.  I have two Graco Snugride 40 car seats (my DS outgrew his original car seat by 4 months old), and I just ordered a ClickConnect Ready2Grow stroller.  One of those mulch-configurable ones.  I also have an simple stroller I can keep in my car while it's just DS so that when the new stroller arrives, I won't be fighting with a 40 lb stroller for only one baby.  Luckily, my husband's best friend and his wife are taking the old travel system for their new baby, so it works out.

  • We have a sit n stand and it has been perfect. I had a travel system double stroller and hardly ever used it. The sit n stand has an infant seat attachment and ours is very lightweight so it works great. It's just so nice to be able to contain them both when I need to. We also have a lightweight single and used that quite a bit as well earlier on. I'll be using the sit n stand when our third gets here so I'm glad we still have it since we really don't use it much now.
