Two Under 2

TTC #2 while still nursing

Hi ladies.  Any advice on getting my cycle to return while nursing?  DD is 9 months old and we would really like to TTC # 2. I am a SAHM and still nurse DD about 5-6 times per day.  STTN, and I no longer pump, so we go a good stretch of about 11-12 hours with no nursing ( most of the time! teething has thrown us some curve balls lately) She eats 2 solid meals per day, but has yet to really drop a nursing session.

I thought this board may be a good place to ask!  Thanks!

Re: TTC #2 while still nursing

  • You really just never know what can happen til you have AF.  I got pregnant while nursing and never had a period so it does happen but it's not common.  If you want to keep nursing you'll have to wait it out and see what happens.  Some people get AF right away, for others it can be months after quitting nursing all together.  My advice is just have a lot of sex and hope for the best!

My son is 9 months and we are still nursing and also TTC #2. I haven't had PPAF either. I have read that if you have a sudden change in your breastfeeding routine that it can speed the return of PPAF.
  • I got pregnant while exclusively breast feeding my 4 month old, but I have a friend who has yet begin ovulating and she is nursing her 2.5 year old. Everyone is different. Some people do not return to ovulation until you cut off the breastfeeding. Breastfeeding releases hormones that suppress ovulation. Similarly, pregnancy can suppress breast milk production.. I had to start feeding my baby formula when we found out we were pregnant--and I hate the idea of formula feeding--but I had dried up as soon as my body could sense I was preggers.

It depends on your balance of preference/ priorities. If you are just vaguely trying, then just keep breast feeding and see what happens. If you want to seriously TTC, and you are ok with weaning your baby now (before the recommended 12 months)--then you might want to do that.
I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!

  • Yes, we are casually trying, so I guess we'll just see what happens for a little while. I don't want to wean DD just yet.
