NBR: Ever used an interior decorator?

This is completely off topic, but I was just curious if there were any interior decorators on the board or anyone who has used one before? I am interested in possibily getting someone in to help me finish off my bedroom and living room (pick wall colors, window covers, a few furntiture pieces to tie everything together). I'm also wondering if they might be able to help us with space planning for our currently unfinished basement (it's a blank slate and we want it to be cool...and to get it done before the baby arrives). But we don't have deep pockets and I have no idea how pricing structures work or anything. I want to know what I am getting myself into before going down this path and the internet hasn't been super helpful (but I keep looking).

Just wondering if anyone has any real world insight?

  • I haven't used one before, but I am a home/DIY blogger and a lot of the home bloggers will do what's called "mood boards" for a specific space. Basically, you send them photos of the space and some blurbs about your tastes and they will create a "look" for you to copy from paint colors to furniture suggestions, etc. Usually these run $50-$150 depending on the person which I imagine is more affordable than having a pro interior designer come out to your house. Just a thought!

  • Depending on where you live (I think it's only major metro areas), another option is this site: www.homepolish.com.  They have someone come in to your space for a very reasonable initial fee, give you ideas, and then you can use their services if you want.  I'm thinking of using it to get some ideas to convert LO's nursery into a shared space.

  • If you are looking for space planning  you are better off looking for an interior designer (preferably with a degree from a FIDER accredited school).   Pricing is going to vary based on where you live and how much help you are looking for.  You could also check and see if any colleges near you have an interior design program and if any of their students are looking for work or if they need anyone to give students residential design experience.

  • I have not used one, but I need one desperately.  I think I'm pretty good at picking out and arranging furniture, but I cannot accessorize to save my life.

I hadn't heard of this and it seems cool, but bummer it is not available yet in my area. :(

I have been considering this for our living room and bedroom. I'm just not sure how good I would be in the follow through of executing the ideas or if my husband will be on board. But I know I have to seek an in person consultation for our basement.

  • We just finished our basement from scratch, and although we didn't use a designer, pinterest and houzz were the best things to ever happen to me.  We got so many great ideas for how to lay out the space, how to make it feel bigger, how to set up lighting, what's worth spending money on, etc.  I don't know how much you go on those sites, but they really do have some great inspiration photos and resources, even if you are going to use a designer.

I love home projects, so I'm a little obsessive!  I hope you have fun!

  • I agree with @jamiecal, especially about houzz as it's maybe lesser known. There is no home project that site doesn't help with, from painting to decorating to I'm sure bigger things as well (I haven't personally done any reno projects so I can only speak to those two). I know that's not what you were asking so sorry to go off topic.

There was a Groupon for an interior designer consult in my city a few months back. I wonder if you could look up deals or students in interior design like a PP suggested?

  • I've used one.  I'm not very good at decorating so I hired an interior decorator.  I found her on www.homeadvisor.com.  You can find anyone on that site.  We did my dining room, kitchen, family room, study, and the master bedroom.  She had two pricing structures.  1.  Pay an hourly rate for her services.  2.  Pay her a 20% markup on everything I purchased from her.  I could be off on the percentage.  It's been a while.  We did everything over a course of a year.

  • Our designer received discounts on everything we purchased, so that made up for the amount that we paid her for her services.
