Toddlers: 24 Months+

Trying to read at bedtime!

My son spends the whole time that we read his 3 books that he picks out re-arranging himself on the bed or the floor or his animals or anything.  I swear it's like we are reading to ourselves almost the whole time.  It's really frustrating.  I know boys can be hyper but jeez it never ends!  Vent over.  Anyone else?

  • DD has recently started to be like this. I have no advice but I am just trying to be consistent and hopefully soon she will chill out again. I tell her to pick out two books and she procrastinates. I then tell her that mommy will pick two books out which really upsets her. I start reading the first book and by the time I'm finished, she hands me the second and settles down for the second. I've found that using funny voices works for me to get her attention.

  • I only read while she's sitting on my lap.  If she wants to get down and run around, no stories.  We read 2-3 books a night, and she usually picks them out from on my lap (she has a mini bookshelf with about 20 books right next to her rocking chair).

  • I don't think it's a "boys" thing, it's a toddler thing to never sit still.  My DD has just started sitting still for one book on my lap at 30 months.  IMO even if they are scrambling around, they still get the benefit of language development from hearing books.

  • Well, my kiddos do this frequently. They are also quite capable of sitting. It doesn't matter to me which they choose.

FWIW, we read a lot of books every day. And they are constantly asking to be read to. When I sit to read, sometimes they want to sit on my lap, sometimes next to me, sometimes they want to stand and dance. Whatever works for them. If I start reading and stop when they get antsy or whatever, they immediately protest.

Like a pp, I think they are still getting many benefits from being read too.

    So I just keep reading.
