Natural Birth

Hypnobabies

My friend burned all the CDs for me and I'm loving the self-hypnosis and relaxation sessions. I have no plans on actually taking the class and can't seem to find a hand me down book. Can anyone share their experience on how they used the program during labor and birth?? Do I listen to any disc I want? The whole time? Sporadically? Please share what worked for you! I'm due with my 4th on September 7th. Planned home waterbirth. Thanks!

Re: Hypnobabies

  • Hypnobabies is copywrited. It is illegal to burn cds for someone else to use. Sorry.

Maria, I've been using hypnobabies, and love it. A lot of what's in the book is general information about natural child birth. The book is helpful, but you could probably get by on just CDs if you've already experienced a natural childbirth or have done a lot of other reading/research. For me the CDs are what I really "needed" from the hypnobabies program.

I've been listening to the CD's everyday, and in the workbook there's a specific breakdown of when to start, and which tracks to listen to on which days. Since you're due in a few weeks, I would say go through each track at least once, then stick with the tracks that resonate with you. The hypnotic childbirth, deepening, and special place tracks have been the most helpful for me, but everyone is different. Also listen to the joyful affirmations track every night before bed. The finger drop technique is pretty important to practice, and the book goes over that as well, but if you can get the hang of it with just the tracks, you should be fine.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to share such good advice. I really appreciate it! I have been absolutely loving the CDs. Maybe too much? I'm asleep/hypnotized very soon into every disc and I'm concerned whether I'm absorbing anything. I must be, right?? I've been focusing on creating anesthesia, deepening, fear release and creating a special place. Is the program designed to actually listen to while in labor? That seems so foreign to me, to have headphones on while contracting. This is my 4th natural birth so I know I CAN do it. But anything to ease the pain is welcome!!
  • This is my first, so I have no idea what to expect, but I decided to bring a small CD player with me to the birth center, since I figured it will be easier to speak with my BF and others if it's playing in the background and I don't have to pull my earbuds out to communicate. Or if you have speakers for your ipod/Mp3 player that might work too.

Disc #6 is for your birthing day, but the book says you can listen to whatever makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. I actually fall asleep halfway through the tracks too! A lot of other women say they do the same, so I figure if I'm so relaxed that I'm dozing off it must be working. I think the most important thing is to just practice and be consistent with it everyday.

    Good luck!

  • Good to know! I've only listened to the finger drop once or twice. I better get that one in tonight !
  • Google babycenter hypnosis for childbirth.  I don't know if it's tacky to suggest going to another site on the Bump, but that message board was extremely helpful in my Hypnobabies study.  There are some very wise people there that answer lots of great questions.

As far as my own experience, Hypnobabies kind of went out the window for me as soon as contractions got really intense.  However, I did end up with a relatively quick med-free birth, and I do attribute my comfort and confidence to my studies.

  • I honestly don't think I would have made it through my birth without hypnobabies. Make sure you practice your finger drops as well as visualizing your babies birth. so excited for you! good luck!

  • I used hypnobabies for my first birth. It was helpful up until transition but I found the eyes open hypnosis too difficult to achieve meaning in order to be successfully in hypnosis I needed to be in a supported position which wasn't the most ideal. I ended up lying down and never getting up till after he was born because I thought it would hurt too much to move and I couldn't maintain the hypnosis. I think my labor would have not stalled had I been in A more gravity dependent position. If you choose hypnosis... Make sure you can do eyes wide open hypnosis and finger drop really well.

I also disagree with the scripts telling you that you will only feel pressure which isn't true and so it creates a conflict when you do feel more than pressure and sort of a panic when your mind isn't sure how to handle this conflict.
