When did they stop u/s cervical length checks?

Just a question for all you mom's who have had cervical length checks via u/s before...

I have been having mine checked since 16 weeks.  Last time (20 weeks), the OB said something along the lines of getting it done at 22 weeks, then 24 weeks again when I see her, then that would be it.  She didn't say it exactly like that, but it was almost like the 24 week u/s would be the last one.  I will obviously clarify it with her when I see her at 24 weeks, but I was just curious if this was the norm?

Thanks!

  • My doc was going to stop at 26 weeks. I ended up with an emergency cerclage after my 22 week check.

Like I said before, I am not sure if they are stopping them at 24 weeks. It just sounded like that the way she was talking. I am going to clarify when I see her, and if I'm not comfortable with that I will definitely discuss it further.  I would at least like to be monitored until 32 weeks because that was when I started PTL with my son.

Kate, my 22 week check is Friday. Hoping everything is staying strong in there!

  • Sometimes at a certain point they don't want to stir up and bad ju-ju so the opt to not look unless necessary. Maybe once you hit 24, and LO is at viability they won't want to risk any infection. In my case I don't get checked unless medically necessary for the reason I stated. Goodluck!
  • My last one is at 35 weeks but it will go with a growth ultrasound. I just had one at 33 weeks.
  • I've been getting mine checked since 22 weeks for a shortening cervix. I just had an appointment on Monday with my mfm to get it checked again and he said he will check it weekly for another two or three weeks so ill be 28 or 29 weeks when they stop.
  • I am currently 26w4d and have been checked every two weeks since 16 weeks. My OB and MFM told me that I will start being checked weekly at 30 weeks if I make it that far. So far my CL has been at 4 or above but I know it can change at anytime. I went into painful labor with DS at 30w4d and he was born the next day. They never found a reason for him coming early so they want to be as cautious as possible. I am a nervous wreck this pregnancy so I like getting checked.
  • I'm 28 weeks and have been having mine checked weekly since 20 weeks when I started having contractions. She hasn't mentioned when she will stop, I have another appt next week. But if you aren't having any signs of PTL maybe they will stop earlier.

I have mine checked every week. I am on hospital bed rest due to a shortened cervix and contractions. They have to check my cervix to make sure the contractions aren't impacting the cervical length and / or my cervix is not shortening further due to the pressure of having twins.

ETA: They will only do regular u/s checks, not manual checks. Manual checks are a last resort since they irritate the cervix.

Mine has been checked weekly since 20 weeks with the cerclage put in on the 21st week exactly. I was told last week that my specialists stop checking after 30 weeks. So, last week was my last check until 36 weeks when it will be removed. I hit 30 weeks yesterday.

  • They usually stop doing them by 30 weeks, because after that point that expect the cervix to shorten.

  • I was diagnosed with a dynamic cervix at 19 weeks. I was being checked every week until I went into the hospital for bed rest. Once I started dilating they check less often and stopped completely at 25/26 weeks because they did not want to "get anything going." If I was conplaining of contractions or bad cramps/ pressure, then I was immediately checked. From weeks 26- 34, I've probably been checked 3 or 4 times.
  • 28 weeks for me. I am 32 weeks now and have had three manual checks. I much prefer the u/s, have had heavy bleeding after the manual checks.

  • I happened to talk to my ultrasound tech about this on Tuesday. She said that after 32 weeks the cervix begins to soften and the baby and uterus are typically pressing on it causing a distorted shortening. I have not had any issues with the length of my cervix (FTM) and haven't needed a manual exam, but have had routine checks with each time I go to the MFM doctor. I am being monitored for per-existing diabetes.
