Where do you buy shoes for your kids?

I think DD's foot is all of a sudden narrow.  I have been to 5 different stores and can't find a good, casual, shoe for the start of school.  I am thinking we need to make a trip out to Stride Rite as I usually have really good luck there.

Re: Where do you buy shoes for your kids?

  • I had the opposite problem when my kids were in preschool and early elementary: they both had huge, wide feet. They come by it honestly, because I wear an 11 and their dad wears a 13.

Stride Rite was the only game in town for us.  Every once in a while I would try to buy less expensive shoes at Target or Kohl's and it always came back to bite me in the end.  Either the shoes were too tight or they fell apart right away.  My kids could usually get a whole school year out of a pair of SRs.  Ultimately, it was cheaper to buy one pair of SRs instead of going back and back to replace the cheap shoes.

One trick that the old lady who works in my SR shared with me was to ask if they have any of last year's sneakers left.  Sometimes they have a few of the previous year's styles sitting around and you get lucky with a $30 pair of shoes instead of paying $50 or 60.

The other option that has worked for us is to get sized at Stride Rite but then don't buy anything, and then go to Marshall's/TJMaxx/Ross.  Ross, if you have it where you live, seems to stock more shoes than the other two.  Might be tough to find narrow sizes at a discount store, though.

  • We have an Stride Rite Outlet near us and I never spend more than 30 there. But since my kids feet are longer wide I go to Stride Tite and Target some too.

  • My one DD has always been able to wear just about anything so I can get her shoes anyplace we find something she likes.  My younger DD has narrow feet and we often end up at Striderite for her.

  • Any store that carries Stride Rite shoes.  Which in my area is either the Stride Rite store, Nordstrom, or shoe boutiques.
  • We do stride rite, and once I know the correct size, then I get great deals at Marshalls. DS#1 and DS2, has double wide feet, and DD, poor thing has long narrow foot, we have a hard time fighting shoes for her.
  • Dillards, Nordstrom Rack and the Nike Outlet.  I sometimes go to Journeys.

  • DD has super super narrow feet too! And tiny at that (she's in Toddler 10s at age 5). I just got her a pair of kids New Balance sneakers on Zulily and they fit like a charm. I find that Payless's shoes also fit her pretty well, but they don't hold up well. She also loves her Crocs but her feet are just swimming in them.

  • Famous Footwear, she typically gets Pumas or Nike.  I like name brand in this area, because I want her to have support in gym class, recess while she runs, etc.

  • I usually order their shoes from Amazon and usually buy Stride Rite.  DD has been wearing Toms too, but DS doesn't like shoes that slip on/off like that.
