Jaw clenching

Anyone clench their jaw while at work?  And what to do about it?

I am under a work crunch and working an insane # of hours........... last night my jaw and head felt like they were going to explode.  Today I feel myself clenching again and it already hurts.  I know it's stress related, but damn, Gina.

Re: Jaw clenching

  • Yeah, I've done this in the past. I just tried to be really conscious of it, and tried to relax. I know that doesn't help much, sorry. But mine got so bad that my jaw locked up on me for minutes at a time. Terrifying when you suddenly can't open or fully close your mouth...

  • The only thing I've ever found that helps that is Excedrin tension headache. Apparently I have been doing it in my sleep recently which is not cool.
  • @kellersprag yes!!!  I have had that happen!  But the pain and headache this early in the day is new :/.  I'll try to be more conscious of it.

@banich4eva maybe I'll be heading to the pharmacy.  do you grind, too?

  • @tinyhumantoe

I do. I go to the dentist tomorrow and I'm sure they will make some noise about a mouth guard.
  • i have been lately, stress of moving cross country, selling our house and family drama. I try and relax my jaw and while I am by myself I hang out with my mouth open.

  • @kbetzner I am rockin out with my jaw open. But it is hard to focus lol!

My dentist suggested a $900 guard. When I said no he suggested a sport piece. I wore one of those during basketball season after the fifth time my braces got stuck on my gums. They are huge! I'd drool more than LO if I slept with one. I'm considering a rubber tooth whitening tray from one of those kits sans the gel. They are thinner

I do it all the time.  I actually do it in my sleep and have to wear a mouth guard.  Yes, it's super attractive.  At work and anytime during the day, I try to just be very cognizant of it and not let my teeth touch at all to avoid it.

ETA:  I use Target brand migraine medicine to treat it when I wake up with a headache but sadly, it doesn't always work.

  • I do this and the only way I can get the pressure and pain relieved is to go to the chiropractor!  He cracks me good and does some Estem and I am going to go for a while....

I hope the stress and hours let up soon!

  • i did this all the time, to the point that it started causing really annoying ear fullness feelings, like you have water in your ear all the time

the thing that had the biggest relief was just watching where my tongue was in my mouth. it should rest behind your top teeth, resting on the top of your mouth. you're teeth will naturally rest just slightly apart. when i clench my jaw, it ends up behind my bottom teeth. it's hard to remember to check, but do what you need to to be aware of it (set an alarm every hour?). it only took me about a week to basically stop clenching full time.

another thing they had me do was open and close my mouth without having my tongue move from the top of my mouth. said it lubed the joint or some shit. told me to only do it a couple sets a day.

i've had the mouth guards for grinding. they are ok, but feel awkward and eventually get nasty no matter how much i try to clean them. once my parent's dog ate mine, i didn't bother getting a new one.
