Experiment over/hello, dairy free

Well, with mixed emotion I must join the dairy free club. :( While I will be glad if this continues to solve the fussing/crying/not sleeping, I am bummed for me (selffish, yes, I know).

This third go around was the first one I had stomach issues - like right out the gate, stomach cramps & gas & food sensitivities were my first symptoms this time. I had gas from so many foods and reflux/heartburn .all things I haven't dealt with past pregnancies. I even told DH at the end "I can't wait to eat normally again! Watch, this LO will be the one with food sensitivities or allergies".

And 3 weeks later, here we are. :/ I love me my dairy AND dH had just bought me icecream and my fav yogurt. They are taunting me ladies, lol.

I am worried how this will impact my diet - if you are dairy free, any negative impact? Do you need additional supplements? What are you eating for breakfast & snacks (I can't eat eggs unless they are baked into something like pancakes or cooies so those are out too & I am at a loss). Any ideas what to combine with flavored oatmeals if you can't use milk? Water was disgusting.

Thanks for letting me whine (but hold the cheese, ha ha, ok sleep deprived humor)- I'll do what I gotta do for LO, but with 3 other dairy lovers here, it will still be in the house and I crave it so. I figured you ladies would understand and might be able to share whatchya are eatiing instead. I'm going to go back and find the thread where someone gave some "fake" dairy foods that are suppose to be decent...

Edit to add: I've eliminated: milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream/frozen yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream - anything else I should eliminate & might not think about? TIA.

I'll have to look for it at the store, thanks! Do you have a smoothie recipe to share? Ours uses lots of dairy products.

It's not so bad once you get the hang of it. I use vanilla rice milk with my oatmeal and throw in some walnuts and banana slices. I've made oatmeal lactation cookies, substituting a cup of apple sauce for butter. I also eat a bunch of deli meat, hummus, and crackers as easy, one handed snacks during the day.
  • Unsweetened along milk for cereal
Sherbet/sorbet for ice cream (just make sure it says dairy free)
    Earth balance to replace butter

I do this normally in my diet, though I do eat cheese so I have no alternatives for you.

Sorry you are dealing with this :(

I have heard yogurt may still be okay so you could test just eating that without any other dairy, just make sure it's a good natural brand with lots of good bacteria/probiotic cultures.
  • Dairy free isn't so bad once you get the hang of it. Just make sure to check labels for hidden dairy. The hardest thing is going out to eat!

  • Make sure you're checking ingredients and also avoiding whey and casein, they also have milk protein in them. Which sadly means no chocolate as well (a few dark chocolates are dairy free). However, Oreos are dairy free, I get them to satisfy chocolate cravings, also there's soy based yummy ice creams and "so delicious" is a coconut milk ice cream substitute. I use almond milk as well. Start googling and you'll soon learn what you can have and it won't feel as limiting as it did in the beginning.

  • There are lots of older dairy-free posts in J13 with great advice. Also, check out MSPI Momma's Pinterest page or blog for lots of great recipes and food ideas (including meals, snacks, and drinks). MSPI stands for milk/soy protein allergy.

A couple of tips: I substitute Silk brand almond milk for cooking and cereal; I drink a small glass of Silk or So Delicious coconut milk instead of my previous go-to glass of chocolate milk. So Delicious also has a great line of dairy-free ice creams made with either almond or coconut milk (about $4.99 for a Ben & Jerry's sized container). Look for "dairy-free" on the back of your margarine or coffee creamer. I do not have advice for cheese or yogurt substitutes yet, unfortunately. My DH misses Friday night pizza.

Changing your diet is a pain, but worth it. Good luck!
  • I'd make sure to check ingredients... The powder coffee creamer that says "dairy free creamer" says "contains milk" in the ingredients... Weird!!

  • I had to go dairy free after DD was diagnosed, so just for 5 months (diagnosed at 9 months and BF until 14 months)

It was really HARD.  I'm not going to lie.  Especially because there is so much HIDDEN dairy.  You will need to read labels very diligently now.  Nothing cooked in butter, no baked goods, chocolate, even many sliced breads contain milk.

I would look for foods labeled "V" for vegan.  That will eliminate anything with trace milk or eggs in it.

  • I've heard that the Daiya brand of vegan "cheese" is pretty good, but I haven't tried it yet. Also, you may want to see if cooked dairy is OK for you. I had to give up obvious dairy, but DD seems to have no trouble with baked goods that have dairy in them (muffins, scones, etc.).

I've seen that on non-dairy creamers, too. Very misleading! I always check for the "dairy free" notice under the ingredients, but also triple-check the ingredients.
