High-Risk Pregnancy

16 weeks progesterone injections

I'm supposed to start Makena injections next week and continue the shots once a week until 37 weeks to prevent preterm labor. I was wondering if anyone who had these injections had any side effects besides soreness at the injection site? I am a little nervous about the side effects listed on Makena's website and plan on talking to my Dr. this Friday. In the meantime I was just curious to hear other people's experiences. Thank you!

Re: 16 weeks progesterone injections

  • I am on makena. My injection site has some slight redness and itching but other then that I don notice anything. Plus the benefits far outweigh the risks. Just make sure you don't have an allergy to sesame/nuts as makena is on sesame oil. Which I am sure you don't as your OB wouldn't put you on it. Goodluck!!!

  • Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback! :)
  • I was on it. I'd have a bit of itching at the injection site a day or two after, but nothing crazy.

It also made my pee and sweat smell super funky. My Ob said she had never heard of that side effect, but about 16 hours after each injection the smells would appear and be gone a few days before the next injection.

My husband have me each injection. He did great and learned how to do it from my OB.

  • Headaches seemed to be the biggest side effect for me outside of pain/itching at the injection site. I just make sure to get some extra caffeine on the days I get them. That helps a bit.

  • Headache at times, ichy and sore injection site. Isn't so bad
  • Like PP's said mostly sore, itchy injection site. Sometime I also feel like they make me extra moody
  • Sore and itchy itchy itchy at sight. Got worse further along in my pg. it was also summer in fl so I was hot and sticky which made it worse. I wore huge pg underwear and only dresses that made it feel better. Ds2 was born at 39 weeks

  • I was on suppositories from weeks 20- 25 and then switched to the injections. I like them WAY more! I'll get my last one at 36 weeks (2 more to go :) ). The only thing I've noticed is muscle soreness and tenseness at the injection site for up to 24 hours. Oh and for some reason they hurt so much more on the left side, so we only do them on the right. My fiancé gives them to me. The nurses at the hospital trained him.
  • Also- sorry if this is TMI- but the shots to sometimes affect my discharge. I usually get more when it is almost time for a shot.
  • I was on them from 16-31 weeks and for the most part only had a little injection site pain, unfortunately I developed and allergy to castor oil (what my shot was compounded in) and had to stop. Good luck

  • I am getting them now, I have had them 4 times and a lot more to go.  The nurse that does them has weird hours so I wanted to see if i could do them another time, so my Dr. had me take them to the hospital where I would be there once a week to get NSTs.  That nurse showed me how to do them my self in my upper thigh which gave me a little bruise feeling for about a day.  I haven't done it yet my self so we will see how that will work.  Otherwise I haven't had any reactions. Good luck.
  • I am currently 32 weeks, and have been receiving Makena injections since 16 weeks. Itching and discomfort at site of injections are normal; however if any of the medication leaks out it can really irritate the skin. After a couple episodes of pretty bad skin irritations my doc and nurses have decided to use a longer needle and since I have barely have any discomfort and itching. Good luck!
  • Hello all- I'm also doing the Makena shots once a week. I started at week 17 and my OB wants me to continue till week 36. I notice redness and slight tenderness around the injection site. The worst part is that it's very itchy at the injection site. Just wondering if the shots prevented preterm labor for anyone one. My DS was born at 32 weeks with no reason why. Just hoping this baby will be make it close to being full term.
