back to lotions and the johnson & johnson questions

FTM here and would have never ever guessed that Johnson and Johnson would be bad for baby! That's all the lotions and shampoos and body washes that I have. So I will be replacing it and was planning on using the Eucerin Lotion like my doc recommends, but as anyone used the Eucerin baby head to toe Aquaphor wash? Or is there a better shampoo/body wash that yall recommend?
One other thing- what about the johnson & johnson face and hand wipes? I couldnt find much info on those...

Re: back to lotions and the johnson & johnson questions

  • Why is it bad?

I just use Burns Bees and Aveeno products -- body/hair wash, lotion, etc.

  • the Lotion thread the other day pointed out all of the chemicals in the johnson's products and I was unaware that was the case!
  • I think probably most lotions have a lot of chemicals in them, don't they?

  • I would assume so but after so many commented on the Johnson's being crap it made me research it a bit, apparently its not all its cracked up to be!

I swear ignorance is bliss... lol
  • Huh.  I wasn't using it anyway, I don't care for the smell, I'm just surprised to hear it is actually any different / worse than anything else on the market. I mean, lotion IS chemicals.

  • From the research I've been doing, because I too was unaware of why Johnson and Johnson is so bad, the chemicals in Johnson's have been found to be cancer causing. I have however seen articles saying they have removed those chemicals from the baby products, or are at least working on finding replacements.

I use Burt's Bee's, and will only use that until my LO's eczema clears up and then may try something else, but he has such sensitive skin not sure if I really want to.
  • I am with you on the irritated part.
  • My LO has very very sensitive skin but Johnson and Johnson products seem to be one of the few that I can use on her.  I think if they were really that bad they would be banned from the shelves?  I mean everything does have to be tested and approved before being sold......right???

From what I've been reading, the US seems to have the least restrictive rules on what companies can/cannot put in their products. Johnson and Johnson uses other ingredients to make the same products in other countries apparently.

These are two articles/sites i found yesterday when I was looking into this whole thing:
  • I don't use Johsnon and Johnson or Aveeno since its made but he same company. I use Burts Bees, Babyganics, or California Baby. Burts bees wash seems really drying and DD has excema so I switched to Babyganics cream wash and its been so much better on her skin.
  • All im saying is that I am not about to throw out all of my Johnson and Johnson stuff. But I too was surprised with what was being said. I really think people panic a lot these days. According to what I have read even bottled water is bad for you. My baby is fine and I use that everyday as our bath routine. I will say it is almost all out so now I just might go for something else or maybe not...don't know yet.

My mom makes goat milk lotion and soap...I use that. No crap in it at all. And it's also great for any eczema. All I'll say about tested products not being allowed on shelves: didnt anyone read about all those people unknowingly consuming horse meat through Fast food chains? That meat was tested and approved to be sold as beef. The so-called tests and approval needed by the government is not as rigorous as we would hope ETA I know that was Europe, but inspections aren't as thorough as we'd hope

  • What does everyone recommend using? Burt's bees?
  • I'm guessing I'm in the minority on this one, but I still haven't used any kind of soap on B. It just hasn't been necessary since she doesn't really get 'dirty'. She gets a nice long soak in warm water every night and I give her a head to toe rubdown with a washcloth, but that's it. I think since we haven't used soap, her skin isn't dry at all so she doesn't need lotion. She smells great, no issues there. When I inevitably need to use soap at some point in the future, I have some from Earth Mamma Angel Baby and as far as lotion, will just use grape seed or almond oil.

  • I use Burt's Bees body wash/shampoo and lotion.  It's great on my kids super dry skin and eczema.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • There are definitely lotions out there that don't have as many/any bad chemicals in them. I also avoid petroleum when possible. I use Earth Mama Angel Baby soap and lotion. I just started using cloth wipes with my own solution of water, coconut oil, and dr bronner's baby soap. We rarely need rash cream but when we do I usually use CJ's butter or even coconut oil.
    I sound pretty crunchy I bet. :)

  • If its so bad why do the hospitals use it?

Over-40 parents...what we lack in vigor, we make up for with cunning.
  • It's cheap for the hospitals to buy?

  • Contrary to popular belief, organic foods may have the same amount of chemicals as non-organic.

@Jaime52005 - Hospitals use it because J&J gives hospitals a lot of money. Think of it as, do you want to use this product and gain several million dollars because you are advertising it to new parents or do you want to not have the several million dollars and have to fund for the more expensive stuff like Burt's Bees or some other product with less synthetic chemicals (But quite a bit anyways).

  • Everything will give you cancer these days......

We use California Baby products and Baby Magic. I love the way baby magic smells and apparently DS does too. He won't let me put any other lotion on him.
