Part timers

If you work part time... What are your hours? What kind of childcare do you have? nanny, send to daycare, etc? What are your DHs work hours?

Re: Part timers

  • I work M-Th 8-4:30 (with a 30 min lunch).  DH is in daycare full-time (starting this year) and DD is in daycare M-Th (stays at home with me on Fridays).  They go to a daycare center.  DH works 7:30-4:30 (with a 30 min lunch) and has a half-day off every other Friday.

  • My hours are generally 3 8-hour days a week.  One week a month I have to work 4 days.  My start and end times are not set, but I generally leave the office by 4.

My DH works OOT, so he leaves Monday morning by 6, comes home Tuesday night by 7:30-ish, leaves agains at 6 am Wed, and comes home Thursday night.  Fri he is gone roughly 7:30 - 7:00.  SO I am on my own with DS a lot during the week.

DS is school aged, so during the school year he is in school 5 days/week and goes to after care 1-2 days/week.  My dad picks him up after school 1-2 days/week.  This summer I used a combination of camps and a nanny as childcare.  A couple of the weeks he went to camp 5 days, some weeks he only did three days of camp.

When he was younger we used a part-time nanny and my parents as childcare.

  • I'm an independent contractor, so my hours are variable.  I generally work Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  DD is enrolled in daycare full time so we have childcare in case I have to do extra work on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  (I practice litigation, and deadlines are unpredictable.)  DH works 40 hours a week, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • I work part-time.  Most days it's just mornings 8:00 - 12:00 Noon, but I work all day one day a week.  That worked better for us and for my company.

My sister is my babysitter.  She's a SAHM and just added my LO to the mix.  I pay her well though, so this isn't a free thing.  It's a way of me having LO in the 'daycare' that I want and her getting the extra income.  It's nice because she usually has the flexibility if I had to switch my "long" day to a different day.  Then twice a month, I stay late at her house and watch her youngest kids so she can volunteer in her LO#1's school classroom for an hour or so.

  • I work 8-4:30 tues / wed / Thurs and all three kids go to a daycare center those days. When ds1 starts kindergarten I'm switching to 9-2 mon-fri and leaving the youngest two at the current center. I'll drop off at school, drop off at daycare then get to work and be able to get my hours in, pick up the younger ones and get to the elementary when they let out. In my head it will be a great schedule...I'll see how it works in a few weeks. DH works 8-5. His commute is 30 Mins, mine is 15 but I do the kid shuttling.

  • I will work M-F, 7:30-2:00, starting this fall.  DH works long, unpredictable hours lately, since he is finishing a big project at work.  LO will go to an in-home daycare.  She has LO, one other toddler, and a kindergartner for before and after care.
