Pacifier

Anyone have a baby who would not take a pacifier early on but recently or after 3 months started taking one? I'm desperate and trying to get my LO to take one. Just wondering if there's any hope... lol.

Re: Pacifier

  • In the same boat over here. But he just found his thumb so I think all hope is lost.
  • Loading the player...
  • I would be ok with the thumb too! She sucks on her fingers but not quite enough yet to help comfort herself.

  • My DS has never really cared for his pacifier. He usually only takes it when he is going to sleep and then will spit it out while sleeping.

  • I have been trying with no luck to get her to take one. She loves sucking on her hand and pointer finger. When I give it to her she just chews on it and won't suck, then spits it out.
  • pacifier hater over here...he hates anything fake (paci, bottle, teether chew toys, sippy cup) only nursing and hand chewing

pretty much the same here. have tried a bunch of different brands too and nothing! I guess I'll be happy in the long run but it would sure be nice right now to soothe her!
  • Our nanny is still surprised when DS won't take the pacifier... I don't think he ever will. But I'm actually a little bit glad that he doesn't take it. I just bave to find other ways to comfort him, and he is getting a bit better at self-soothing as he gets older.

  • My DD will only be soothed by nursing and its getting worse. I think things are gonna get ugly here soon... especially at night.

  • DD took to the pacifier immediately and we are still fighting with her to give it up!  DS is not as interested in it.  He will take it but pretty much spits it out right away. Every once in a while he will keep it for longer but nothing like his sister.  I am actually ok with it because we are on the other end of the spectrum with big sister and can't break her of it.  I'm kind of feeling like I'd rather not start this habit with him because then I don't have to break it!

Why do you want your baby to take a pacifier? I'm so happy these girls hate them. I think it is so much better for them to learn to self sooth without something that can get dropped or lost

I want her to take a pacifier because she can't sleep without nursing. As soon as she doesn't have the boob in the mouth she wakes up looking for it again (we bed share). It's frustrating! She used to be able to just nurse sleep and then go back to bed. She isn't even sucking half of the time, just wants it in her mouth. If we try soothing her by rocking she takes over an hour to fall asleep and has on two occasions ruptured a capillary in her eye from crying so hard and long. I would much rather have to break her of the habit later as I did with DS. I feel like it's easier to reason with a 2 year old then watch my poor DD suffer now. I am just getting less and less sleep as she's increased her waking up and looking for boob. I think I know the answer is that we are just going to have to have some tough times of slowly weaning her off this behavior. I feel like I have created my own monster and she's turned on me. Lol

That is so sad that she's burst capilarries in her eyes. :(  I'd want to force the paci on her too!  I hope you can get something to work.

  • Just a couple weeks ago DD took a sucky. We tried 4 different brands before she settled on Dr. Browns. I was hoping she'd take a MAM like DS cos I think they are so cute, but nope. We tried gumdrop, Advent soothies, MAM and Nuk.

Thanks for a success story! I'll have to try Dr. Browns!

I just realized avent auto corrected to Advent! Whoops! Yes we had to try a lot before we found success! With DS we just tried gumdrop then MAM and he took those right away.

  • DD2 initially would not take one either. I eventually got her to take it during an hour long car ride. She was normally great in the car, but that particular time, she was inconsolable because it was past her bedtime, and she wasn't home in her bed. She never took to a bottle either, so the only thing we could do was keep driving. I held the soother in her mouth for most of the car ride, and by the time we were home, she liked it.

Also, I know it has been mentioned in another post, but have you tried easing the soother in as you ease your boob out? GL!

  • My DD took one then refused for awhile and then we switched to bigger ones 6 month -18 month I think she was able to latch on better to the bigger ones. We have smoothies, Playtex, and she takes a NUK

  • DS will take one when he's incredibly tired, and he expects me to hold in in for him...so we don't really use one. I thought for a while he was going to try to suck his thumb because every now and then he would stick it in his mouth, but he doesn't have any interest in that, especially now that he's got a few teeth.
