April 2013 Moms

I'm a horrible mom.

A dog mom that is. I feel so horrible saying this but pretty much ever since we brought DD home I can't stand my dog. I really hope I'm not the only one that feels this way but I probably am. He has always been a good dog and still is to some point.

Whenever DD cries he cries and whimpers and howls. Okay that was cute the first dozen times but now it goes right through me. I get headaches everyday sometimes twice a day and his barking and howling is the last thing I want to hear.

Also, the other day we came home and he shredded our comforter! Luckily we have another set. I wanted to make him an outside dog. He had never done anything like this. I know he is just acting out because he doesn't get all the attention but my gosh. Sorry this is def a vent but does anyone have this problem too?

Re: I'm a horrible mom.

  • YES. I put up a post about my cats acting out last week or so. It is so frustrating! They used to be so good. Now one is constantly hissing and growling, even at me, which she has never done before. One of them peed in my DD's diaper bag and I had to throw everything out. Tell me THAT wasn't a statement. I was furious with them all. But it did make me realize that I do not give them even remotely the attention I used to give them before DD, so I am making a conscious effort to give them individual attention as I can now. I don't know if it will help but all I can do is wait out the behaviour issues. No matter how mad I am, there is no way I could re-home them. They are still my fur babies, and I am responsible for them.

Maybe it might help to speak to a trainer about your dog's behaviour, and they might have some ideas that could help you. Could he have shredded your comforter because he is bored or not getting enough attention? I would try to set aside some time every day (even 10 minutes might help) to walk or play with him, so he doesn't feel ignored. Good luck, I know how you feel!

  • I feel the same way about my dog. I love him to pieces, but I can't stand him right now. We pretty much babied him to death before we had DS and that's totally our fault as dog parents. I'm hoping that once DS starts to gain some independence, I'll start to like the dog again. But for now, having him all up in my face or under my feet is driving me up a wall. I've also banished him out of our bed at night because I'm so exhausted at the end of the day, the last thing I want is a dog laying on top of me all night long.
  • Did you see my post about having to throw out my entire BM stash because my cat opened the freezer while we were out of town and everything thawed? Forget about not giving enough attention I could seriously kill him.

He has been second fiddle since we brought DS home 3.5 years ago. It is hard to give even more of myself to yet another being, after DS, a baby and my husband I am spent. The cat is lucky he gets fed regularly.

How the heck did your cat open a freezer?  I can't believe a cat would be capable of that.  I have cats, and they wouldn't be able to do that.  Are you sure some human didn't leave it open by accident?

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • @kgs0505, I have heard of cats opening fridges and such before. One of the many reasons I think cats are creepy. :)

Our dog has been a pill too. I know he needs more attention and exercise, but DH is the runner in the house so I sort of feel like that's on him. Dog has become a master at destroying pacifiers. Not a fan.

  • My dog ate a dozen books when I was pregnant, and she's eaten a dozen pacifiers now. She found a pill bottle in the neighbor's yard with who knows what in it and threw up on our carpet in a dozen places, and a couple days ago she ate half a bar of soap and threw up some more. Yay.

  • I was in the same boat a few weeks ago but have forced myself to make one of LOs naptimes doggie playtime. We play fetch or I let them swim or if its raining our boxer at least runs on the treadmill. Since getting them that little bit of extra exercise they have calmed down so much.

  • My poor pups too. They are being so good. I know they miss my attention but I try to pet them when they ask to be petted. They only issue we have is they steal food now never did before LO. They ate half a pizza while we were giving LO a bath, some turkey bacon ( I wasn't a huge fan anyway) they drink my tea if I step away from it, what got me is I thought DH finished some food for me right after we brought LO home later I asked him if he ate it and he said no. The next day I was eating left ovees of the same meal and heard the plate hit the floor, I think I was changing LO. We have learned!

I just read your post. 60+ oz. I would've thrown up then proceeded to throw the cat in the car and drop it off at the nearest Chinese restaurant and wished it the best of luck . But that's just me. I told DH the other day that our dog is lucky he gets food and water regularly too. Lol

We rehomed our dog when he started pooping in front of the crib in motn...he now lives with a little old lady that spoils him and I'm relieved. It was a win win for us.
  • Ours is an issue too! She has started to regulary poop, and maybe pee, all over the house during the day when we are at work. We needed to stop so I shut her in the laundry room (big room)  the other day with her food and water. BIG MISTAKE. Came home to find food, water and poop everywhere in that room, she also shredded the mat her bowls sit on. She has never done that before. Day two in the room was a repeat,  I didn't have the heart or the strength to clean it up again today so she is out again.  We are trying to give her more attention, I know she misses us.  I bought her some new toys to play with tonight.

  • My brother had issues with his dog destroying everything once they had kids, so I've been really trying to give our dogs individual attention whenever possible. They are really good with our LO but I know that they have been neglected compared to how life was before LO came along.

I do take them for walks frequently - I'm the crazy lady pushing a stroller with two 60 lb dogs. I think it helps them associate the baby with something fun and I really think they are proud to go for walks with "their" baby. They're actually probably better behaved on their leashes when I have the stroller than when we go without it. I'm not sure what we'll do once the ground is snow/ice covered..

  • Yeah DH works crazy shifts so I usually get to walk DD and the dog alone. Our dog weighs 130 lbs and likes to chase loud vehicles. But if it comes to him dragging me to chase a vehicle and dragging DD down with us, his big butt is staying home. I told DH if he tries that I'm letting go of his leash. Its not worth DD getting drug around.

I highly recommend the "halti". It's a type of collar that goes around the dogs muzzle. If the dog tries to pull away from you the collar pulls his snout. We have a crazy boxer and I can't walk him with no issues using the halti. If he pulls he stops himself because it squeezes his snout.
