Walking Around To Soothe

Help!

My LO can only be soothed if DH and I walk around the house with him. Sometimes we're walking around with this 16lb meatloaf for over an hour. Today it was a 2 hour meltdown. Sometimes I just lay him in his crib and let him scream so I can take a moment to breathe. However, it seems like the only thing that calms him down sometimes is walking around the house and it's killing my back to do it for hours at a time during the day.

Does anyone have or has anyone had this problem? If so, did LO grow out of it, or did you do something to transition them from having to walk around with them all day long? Momma is wiped out!

Re: Walking Around To Soothe

  • My LO doesn't melt down often but when he does walking around calms him down. DH normally takes him to a window or outside to stare at stuff and he's usually okay after that.

  • DD loves walking around and looking at things, and it does help to calm her down. Like PP, windows help a lot. Sometimes I even take her into the backyard. I haven't had to use it in a while but I bought a sling to wear around the house when I needed it and it helped a lot. We also try and go for a walk in the stroller every day (usually the morning) and she loves it.
  • DD had done this every now and then. Same as PP we'll just have her look at different things and we'll say "look at the trees look at your pretty toys look at the neighbors dog peeing in our yard" etc whatever it may be. She also loves looking at herself in the mirror. But whenever you sit back down with her just keep that same tone of voice and excitement and hopefully it will keep her attention. Even sitting back down with her kind of sway your upper body to make her have the motion feeling that she probably is craving. Then once she calms down you can slowly quit swaying. HTH!
  • Welcome to the club. T gets like this and I have gotten to where I get too tired. I use the carrier or put him in the swing and he usually gets better. T is a motion loving baby.

  • Walking outside or running water helps me soothe faster and usually I can get her calm enough to gracefully lay her down on her tummy (gasp) to finish her nap. If I lay her on her back we have to start all over again.

  • My first child was like that. She grew out of it around 6 months. I lost lots of weight walking and bouncing her around.

  • My LO (also 16 pounds!) will nearly always calm down if we walk around outside (weather permitting). I try to get him outside at least once a day, and many days I put him in the Ergo while I walk my dogs for an hour. I understand about your back hurting though.

  • When my DD does this i hold her till she's calm enough then i put her in her swing and she usually stays relaxed and eventually falls asleep for a nap : )
