Gas

How often do your LO's have gas that causes them to cry? I feel like at least once a day, both of my girls get really fussy and refuse to nurse, or repeatedly pull away and fuss while nursing, when they seem hungry. Both are on Zantac to rule out reflux but it doesn't seem to be helping. I often notice them farting during these spells so I give them gas drops hoping they'll help, but usually can't tell if they do.

I'm just wondering if daily gas troubles for both babies is a lot, and either the fussiness is probably due to something else, or if something in my diet is causing them both gas pain. (Poops are fine so i dont think they have an intolerance). Today one baby had a scary choking episode due to screaming so hard at the breast and choking on milk or saliva, I know babies choke a lot, but this one was so scary it had me in tears afterward.

So frustrated.

Re: Gas

  • Hugs to you! It so scary when they choke.

We never really know what the problem is, but when DS acts really fusy and spills away arching his back we always assume gas. We give him gripe water and it usually settles him down.

I hope your girls start feeling better. Sorry I don't have any great words of wisdom.

  • I'm sorry you and the babies are going through all that!

G has episodes where he cries fr gas daily, some days he even shrieks right before he lets one rip. I know he's in pain and I hate it.

He's on Zantac too, and it seemed to help with some symptoms but not all.

I'm now eliminating soy from my diet, and I already don't eat dairy. But his poo is often completely watery, green, mucosy, and even had blood a few times recently. Since eliminating the soy, his gas episodes are getting less frequent, and now he passes gas without crying more often than with crying.

It SUCKS. But our pedi said they usually grow out if it. Until the blood, she wasn't concerned at all.

We're also staring probiotics. We tried to start yesterday, but it clogged the Dr. Browns bottle, so he didn't actually get much.
  • Thanks ladies. We've had no stool issues and I'd be surprised if both babies had an intolerance.

Parenting would be so much easier if these babies could talk! :)

  • My LO has gas pain that causes him to cry daily. It's a struggle because he wants to nurse for comfort during these episodes but then he gets even more frustrated that the nursing upsets his tummy more. I find thay if I hold his legs bent toward him (which can be hard because they are surprisingly strong legs) that it helps release the gas. My logic is that he tries to straighten his legs when he is pushing the gas out and that just closes his butt up. I haven't tried gas drops yet. Maybe that would help too.

We do the the Gerber BabyGaia Probiotics, and I really think it's helped. She'll have gas now, but not the horrible gas she had at four weeks.
  • We're on the Gerber probiotics, we're trying axid for silent reflux and I'm now cutting out dairy (about 3 days in). We're now seeing a change in our LO- if you ask me, the biggest change has to do with the dairy.

DD was incredibly gassy and fussy for a long time- she was diagnosed as "colic".
