Car trip with just trained toddler

Dd has been trained since day 5 after I started with no accidents. She is dry at nighttime and naps too. We haven't left our house yet though. Would you chance going on an almost hour long car ride in a week?

Re: Car trip with just trained toddler

  • I travel 2 hours to go to my moms and I still put a pull up on her for the ride. If there were a lot of places to stop I probably wouldn't, but there are very few stops on the way. I did read somewhere that a mom packs the potty. Like in the back of the SUV. That's an idea. I just can't imagine pulling over and letting DD pee in the trunk. Haha

Lol..yeah, I don't even own a potty. It's a straight run. I think ill put a diaper over her undies maybe then in case of an accident. I don't use diapers at all now, but I still have a few left over.

  • I would just put a pull up over the underwear for our 8 hour trips to my in-laws.  She did quite well and stayed dry until usually just before we pulled over for breaks.  She has been trained for  1 1/2 years now and just this spring I started just putting her in without a pull up on overtop.

  • DD has been potty trained since April and we just took a road trip back in July.  It worked out fine, no accidents.  You could always pack a potty just in case.  We recently purchased the Potette, it's a small fold-up potty, what a life-saver!
  • I don't have experience with this firsthand, but if I were you, especially considering she's dry at night/naps and has been doing so well, I think I would just chance it.  No point in a pull up when she hasn't indicated she needs one.  If you're really worried I think I'd put a puppy pad kind of thing underneath her to protect the seat.  I don't think I would do a pull up though.  JMO!
  • I wouldn't do a diaper if she's doing well. Wait until she proves she can't do it instead of underestimating her. If you are really nervous you could put on rubber undies or put a puppy pad in the car seat (not sure if that last suggestion is safe).

I also have a potty in my car. I take DD to a real bathroom if its available but there have been times on the road or at a park where there is no bathroom. It may seem gross but I'm trying to make sure DD is successful with potty training so I'm willing to deal with the ewww factor.

Good idea. We have a dog and a ton of pads.

I found a piddle pad for the car seat at bru. I'll probably end up buying that too.
  • I still put my kids in pull up for trips.  We just call them "travel pants."  When we are driving, we can be 30 to 45 minutes away from a bathroom and just trained kids sometimes can't make it that long.  I also have potty chairs in the car for real emergencies.

For me, I don't want to risk having their car seat wet with urine.  We are sometimes gone for a week or so and the last thing I want to do is un-install the car seat, find a washing machine, and then have to put it all back together!!
  • I did the underwear under a pull up for the first few days. Now we keep a potty in the car. Someone here recommended lining it with a grocery store bag and some paper towels to absorb the pee. Works well for us.

  • We just did 12 hours each way on our vacation. I keep a potty in my car. We put a new bag in the potty before each use and keep the potty clean. I started with 1 hours trips. When she has to go we find a parking lot and let her go. I would much rather do a potty in my car then put her back in a pull up or diaper.  We only had one accident in the car and it was when she was first potty trained and I didn't believe her when she claimed to have to pee 20 minutes after the last potty break.
