Hand, Foot, and Mouth

So DD has had a fever over 100 for the last 24 hours. DC just called and said they have had 3 confirmed cases of HFM. I'm taking her to the pedi to get her checked out in about an hour but I wanted to know if anyone has already had experience with HFM. The silly ftm in me is kinda freaked out.

Re: Hand, Foot, and Mouth

  • Hfm will become really obvious when the sores break out.. Check los mouth.. Sometimes they show up there first...

Every kid I know in daycare has gotten hand foot mouth, it is just a waiting game for Leo to get it. It sucks but isn't a big deal. It was my UO the other week that I hoped he would get it when it was going around daycare but he didn't. It was a good week for me to take off work which is why I was good with him getting it.

Hopefully you have already had it so you don't get it. I have heard it is harder on adults. James' started with a fever, then he stopped eating, then he got spots. For the pedi to confirm it is hfm, she will have to have spots on 2 of those places. She could still get spots even if she doesn't have them today.

  • I don't think I've had it before, DH has. We are still nursing so I'm sure I'll get it.
I don't see any spots, she's just feverish, lethargic, and not hungry. Poor babe.

  • DS had it at about 1.5 yrs old.

It takes about 7 days from when they contract it, to when symptoms start forming. DS had a sore that stemmed outward from the corner of his mouth & then got the sores on his gums.

He had loss of appetite & was very miserable. We were instructed to give Tylenol a short while before meal times to help ease the pain with eating. He ate mostly homemade chicken soup & crackers softened in the soup.

It all lasted about 3 weeks. It sucked. HTH

  • I actually got HFM when LO was 2 months old. It wasn't a huge deal, but it sucked. I hope she doesn't have it, but if she does I hope she gets over it fast. The doc made me wear a mask while nursing and I couldn't hold her otherwise.

  • DD had hand, foot and mouth two weeks ago. Same as the PPs with the fever, sores in her mouth, lethargy. She lost her appetite for a couple of days. There wasn't much we could do except give her Tylenol or Ibuprofen and popsicles to soothe her mouth.

  • LO had HFM a couple of weeks ago. It actually first showed up on her diaper area. I thought she had a minor diaper rash, but when I put the puzzle pieces together, I realized it was HFM. I confirmed it when I saw the sores in her mouth. Definitely check out the hands, feet, mouth, and diaper area. I hope it's not what it is! If it is, like PPs said, ibuprofen and tylenol to help with the pain.

  • She has a double ear infection and I guess we will figure out soon if she has HFM as well. She doesn't have any sores, yet, and I'm hoping it stays that way. I'm hoping we don't get hit with a double whammy!!
Thanks for all the input ladies!!
