Toddlers: 24 Months+

Question for those who had late talkers

My son is just shy of twenty months and still just says several animal sounds, go, uh oh, and his own version of please. The pedi isnt worried so I'm trying not to worry either.

I'm wondering though, for those who had late talkers who've since caught up, was there a language explosion? What age? Did it really seem to happen out of nowhere or were there other signs that they were gearing up to talk? Thanks!

Re: Question for those who had late talkers

  • For my DS, there was a huge explosion basically immediately after turning 2. He went from being a little behind to using full multi-word sentences within a month. His 2nd birthday was actually when he first combined two words. FWIW, my DCP told me that in her experience turning 2 seems to be when language really clicks for little boys.

  • DS didn't talk until 21 months. Our doctor was also fine with it, and so were we, so we didn't take him in for it.

It built very gradually in his case. Just one word for a couple weeks, two more for a couple more. And a steady acceleration since then. His first 2-word statement took two months.

He's just starting using full, complex sentences in the last week or so, at almost 28 months.

  • Thanks for all the responses! My gut tells me he'll talk when he's ready, so I think we will reevaluate when he's 2. I really appreciate reading the different experiences from others who've been there.

  • DS has a word explosion at 3 1/2.

DD had a word explosion at 15 months and again right around 2 years 2 months. Now she won't stop talking.

My son started talking in five word sentences at 2y5m. no signs of a language explosion-he just went from two word phrases to conversational speech out of the blue. Dd has a large amount of words but i still wouldnt consider her "talking" yet since its mostly single words--still very behind the curve. She never really had an explosion--more slow, steady progress at her own pace. Both of them started speech therapy at 1.5 and don't regret starting that early at all. While the majority of kids who talk late catch up on their own, there are a good percentage that have language disorders and there are better outcomes for those kids the earlier you intervene.

  • DD would babble constantly, but not say more than about 10 words that we could consistently make out until she was close to 2.  After that, she took off and hasn't stopped since.  She'll be 3 in November, and every day she says something new that makes me thing "Where in the world did you hear that from?!"
  • At 20 months, ds was barely babbling. In fact, he didn't babble, do the mama, dada sounds much at all. He really started talking a month or two before he turned two. At two, he was talking in 4-5-6 word sentences. Dd has babbled and talked incoherently and said a word or two in each long phrase/sentence until she was 25 months. She then did 2 work phrases, and by 27-28 months, she talks in almost complete sentences. I know it's hard, but I'd give it time.

  • Callum said not a word - no animal sounds or any babble aside from "da" - until he was 2.  A few months later he was speaking in clear, mostly grammatically correct sentences.  We did do ST for about 6 months but in the end our ST said she didn't feel like she had really done anything for him, that he was just a late talker.  Still, he enjoyed it and it didn't hurt him so I think it's worth considering if you are concerned.
  • My girl had a real language explosion around 22 months. She went from like 2 words at 15mo to a handful at 18mo and then BAM, 200+ right before she turned 2 years old.

  • Thanks again everyone for your responses. It's encouraging to know that we've still got time and if he doesn't catch up that there are resources to help. Thanks!

  • My son didn't start talking until 2. I don't remember many words before that. At age 2 he had about 10 new words a day. Now he won't stop. Lol. It will happen. It's frustrating when they don't but other children their age are.
  • My DS had a word explosion right after he turned 2. Now he talks so much and soaks words up like a sponge.

  • Just one thing to keep in mind is that Early Intervention (which is either sliding scale or free-in my we were at the end of the top scale so they just accepted our insurance & weren't allowed to charge us the overage according to the gov't so it came out free) ends at age 3, plus they need several weeks to diagnose.  It's like having a free babysitter that comes to your house for an hour.  I highly recommend it.  I get all my chores done in that hour.  I swear!
  • We just started my almost 2 yr old with EI.  He sees a speech therapist once a week and a developmental interventionist twice a week.  So far, it's been 3 weeks of intervention and he is starting to talk more.  We were less concerned with him being behind and more concerned with him being incredibly frustrated!  I am hoping that he will really start picking things up within the next year!
