Rapid pulse and shortness of breath

Im 29w 3d and I've been having shortness of breath throughout the last month.  These are babies #2 and #3 for me so I am well acquainted with the shortness of breath with a singleton.  However, in the last couple of days, it seems much more extreme.  Just walking about 15 ft on flat ground from my living room to my kitchen gets my pulse soaring and I have to stop in the middle of the kitchen to bend over and breathe. Dr. Google says increased heart rate means call the doc...  I mentioned the shortness of breath non-chalantly to my OB 2 weeks ago but she seemed unconcerned...  but with the increased difficulty this last week....I'm not sure what to do.  My BP has been perfect all throughout this pregnancy and my last pregnancy too.  I had some extra tests done early on due to extreme dizziness and headaches... everything was normal. The Doc seemed to think it was due to the babies (or my uterus, more specifically) pressing on the veins and arteries near my heart.   My first pregnancy was very easy with basically NO complications and I'm wondering now if I should wait for my Appt on Monday (6 days away) or if I should call and sound like a crazy pregnant lady when I say.. I know its normal to have shortness of breath... but seriously mine is more extreme.   WWYD?
Thanks!

  • I'd be the crazy pregnant lady. I was basically in L&D every week starting at week 22, so I got over it pretty fast. Not worth the risk -- twin pregnancies are crazy cakes. Rule of thumb: If you are asking if you should call, you should call. :)

It's probably nothing, but for peace of mind, I'd totally do it.

  • I agree with pp. Definitely better safe than sorry. As a side note, to maybe ease your mind, these are babies 3 and4 for me and I definitely feel the shortness of breath and the increase in blood pressure after walking. It seems like it goes hand in hand. My ob told me that as long as it comes back down within a reasonable time (for my ob it was 15-20 mins) then Im okay. When I got my bp taken at my last NST whem I first got in there, it was 152/60 or something INSANE. Thats nit me, my bp has been really good. They took it again 15 mins later and it came back down...110/70 or something close to that. But thats me...we are 2 different people. Call and check.
  • Yep, I agree, be the crazy pregnant lady.  If it's that bad, you should call.  I had the same thing, but my shortness of breath was over a much longer flat distance, but immediate upon climbing stairs.  And I never felt my heartrate go nuts.

FWIW - I got yelled at by my doc for not calling enough and waiting for the next appt.  I was in L&D at least 3 times before I delivered for various things.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Just a random thought...Have they checked your blood yet to see if you deal with anemia? I deal with anemia and boughts of my blood pressure being high but when I don't take my iron I feel exactly this way this pregnancy. Just a thought. Hope all ends up being well.

  • You should definitely call.  I had the same thing happen around 28 weeks.  I am a nurse and work in the same building as my OB and they had me come up right away.  The OB was with me for maybe 4 minutes before deciding to send me via ambulance to L&D.  They ran numerous tests (blood work, chest xray, doppler studies of legs, etc) and kept me overnight. They were worried about a blood clot but everything checked out okay.  It is probably nothing but it could be SOMETHING and it is always better to be safe than sorry.  Mine never went away, I just learned to accept it as my new normal until I delivered at 36 2/7 and then it was gone immediately.  Good luck!

I am right there with you! I can't even do steps without breathing like I ran a marathon. But lately my heart has been racing in the mornings. I asked the nurse at my OB office last week while I was in getting my weekly shot. She took my BP and didn't seem to be too concerned. I have my monthly apt tomorrow, I will let you know what they say!
