Rookie Fertility Question

Sorry to ask such a rookie question.  I have never really been able to chart because I have never cycled without meds, and then I was monitored by the RE so no point in charting.  My body appears to be making an attempt to cycle, but the timing is all off.  If my cycle is 6 weeks instead of 28 days, and I am possibly O-ing around 4 weeks, can that still be a fertile cycle?  TIA!

Re: Rookie Fertility Question

  • Yes but the problem is knowing if you O or not. I think the only way to know is by a blood test to see your estrogen levels to say if you did in fact O. Was Oing an issue for you to begin with? I have PCOS as well and I know some people do get pregnant without meds so you never know! I just know my follies never grow to that point.

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • I had never ovulated on my own prior to pregnancy. But I've had 3 cycles since E was born, they seem to be 6 weeks apart, and I'm having some O signs. Obviously we're going to try either way since we can't know for sure, but I wasn't sure if it's even possible with a cycle of that length.

  • That can definitely be a fertile cycle. Like Mcgeeva said, you can't know 100% that you're ovulating but if you use opks and or temp you can be pretty sure. On my unmedicated cycles ive just been using opks. Im too lazy to confirm with temping.

Sounds like if your cycles are about 6 weeks or 43 days then you would ovulate approx. 14 days before your next period. Therefore around cd30 if you have a normal LP. Maybe try using opks around that time this cycle and see if you get any positives?

  • Ditto pp! Temping is a PITA but along with opk's you could be pretty certain about o-ing. My first, and only, clomid cycle was crazy long. My first meeting with our RE fell on CD 47 ish. They did an u/s and sure enough, I was ovulating!

    Good luck!!

A typical LP is 10 to 14 days, so you are *probably* ovulating anywhere from 10 to 14 days before your period starts. I had six week cycles for a long, long time and my RE told me that it is probably wasn't an "efficient" ovulation, whatever that means. Didn't matter for us, since we have severe MFI, though. Good luck! I agree that temping is a PITA, but ultimately important if you are going to try unmediated cycles.

  • Yup.  I think even up to 45 days can be considered normal.  I agree with what PP's said about charting and using OPK's.  Although, I quit temping because it ended up being too anxiety producing to worry about trying to take temps at the same time...especially when I was getting up with a LO.  I just use OPK's and monitor CM now.  Did you notice egg white CM around the time you O'd?

No, but I didn't even when I was definitely O'ing and being monitored.  Apparently I'm not very in touch with my body.  She's kind of a jerk ya know.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I never noticed CM either until I started being aware of it.  Now I am very aware of it.

Also, some people don't get a lot of CM or don't see it.  And if you take certain meds (like some allergy meds - I know I have been taken them recently!) it can dry up CM.

I suppose it also could have been an anov cycle, too.

I think that was more my question... With PCOS and 6 week cycles, if I am even ovulating, is it "efficient" or efective?
