SAHMs: No Fixed Wakeup?

DS still wants to nurse anywhere from three to six times a night. I know that it's best to develop a routine with our LOs, but feel so tired in the morning that I can't bear to wake him up if he is still sleeping. He wakes up on his own anywhere from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m.

Does anyone else not have a fixed wakeup time? DS sleeps every two hours after he wakes up, so I feel like we do have a routine once we get going.

Re: SAHMs: No Fixed Wakeup?

  • We don't have a fixed wake up time. DD generally wakes up between 6:15-6:45, but if she sleeps later, I let her. She didn't wake up until 8:30 this morning! I figure if she is sleeping longer, then she probably needs it.

  • I'm not a SAHM, but we have either my parents or the nanny at the house, and the girls wake up when they want to wake up. They're pretty dang consistent about when they wake up, but we don't dictate that by any means.

  • I've always let my kids sleep when they want and they have always put themselves on a regular schedule.

Right now DD is usually up during the 7am hour.

IMO routine is better than schedule so I think you're doing it right.

6.30-8am seems like a pretty wide time frame IME.  Is there a time that your LO seems to wake up around more often?  Or do they seem tired more quickly if they're up for the day at 6.30?  I only ask because if DD woke up hours earlier than usual I would try to get her back to sleep.  If it's close to 7am, NBD, but if she was trying to get up like... earlier than 6.30 I would try to get her to go back to sleep, if possible.  JMO though based on my experience, maybe your LO just really likes to vary their wake up time!

  • SAHM and no set wake up time either. If she wants to sleep I let her sleep. I don't see a point in waking her up. If I had to get her up because I had to go to work or just have to go somewhere then I would. She usually wakes around the same time every morning anyways, but sometimes sleeps longer. And like you said once she's awake she's pretty routine with naps and eating

  • i have the same "schedule" as you... except I go back to work soon and will need to wake him up...uggg
  • DD put herself on a schedule with sleep and wake up time. She has been STTN since 2 months... Although, DH and I are slowly getting her into an earlier bedtime... Amelia was going to be at 11pm and waking up at 1030am... Now we are down to 10pm and waking up around 9-930am which is still pretty awesome for all of us. We want to get her to a 9pm bedtime, I always feel weird when I see everyone's bedtime is so early and my Amelia goes to sleep so late, but oh well that's just how it goes around here.

    Stefibeth,

You're right. His normal wake-up time is 7 a.m., but if he wakes too early and I can see that he isn't going back to sleep, I take him in our bed and nurse him back to sleep. Then he'll sleep until 8 beside me.

  • I wake her up at 7:00 most mornings. I used to let her sleep until whenever. But we were having a lot of wake ups during the night and a sleep expert suggested I get her on a routine. So She is up at 7, naps at 9 and then around 1ish. Since we started that she has been having longer naps and also sleeps better at night. Which could be coincidence, I am not sure.

Thanks. It has only been for a few weeks now. And I can't say I will end up sticking to it. If she continues sleeping well I may just let her change her schedule herself. Though now she just gets up around 7 anyways even if I don't go get her right away.

  • DD usually wakes up at 630-7. One week I'll be really great at getting up with her and starting our days and the next I'm just so exhausted I can't get out of bed that early and I know it's really bad for her because I'll pull her into my bed and she'll usually fall asleep nursing but I know she's not really tired & it totally throws off her naps.

Such a catch-22, I really need her to sleep better at night so I'm not so tired but I'm betting part of her not sleeping well is the lack of a good sleep routine. The past 3 days she was amazing with naps, 45 minutes/90 minutes/45 minutes each 2 hours apart and then today she napped for a total of 60 minutes... I'm hoping it's teeth :/
