Heating Deli Meat

I know this topic is probably brought up all the time, but I was told by my doctor today to avoid pre-packaged deli meat and to only get deli meat from the deli counter where I can see them cutting it. He also said that heating up the meat doesn't do anything and that basically it's a myth that you read on the internet.

I want to trust my doctor, but literally every website, including government websites and health organizations, say that deli meat is okay if you heat it until its steaming, which should kill any bacteria. I can't find any information to back my doctors statements. Has anyone else heard this from their doctor?

Re: Heating Deli Meat

  • I would avoid the deli counter like the plague - you have no idea how long that meat has been there!!!!  I have been buying the packaged and then heating it up ie: ruben sandwich

  • Are you pregnant? Is there a reason, otherwise, you're concerned?

When I was pregnant, I brought this up to my midwife since I read about it.. and she said "meh".  Honestly, it wasn't a concern for her.  She said as long as I ate in moderation, she wasn't all up in arms about it.

That said, deli meat is filled with sodium and junk away.. so I only have it maybe 1-2 times a week. And I buy low sodium.

But the thought of heating deli meat makes me skin crawl.

  • I don't think it's a myth.  I didn't eat deli meat much while I was pregnant, but my MWs gave me a packet about pregnancy do's and don'ts and that was one of the things listed.  Heat deli meat until steaming!
