How long is considered a session?

DS is 3 days old and we are still adjusting to nursing.  I have been keeping track of how often he nurses each day.  At the hospital, they told me that at least ten minutes equals one session.  Typically he will stay on each breast for 10-15 minutes, totaling 20-30 minutes each session.  I listen for his swallowing to decide whether he's done but it's still hard since my milk hasn't come in.  He seems to need to nurse about every two hours at this point.  

Is this about what what everyone else is doing for this age?

    DD would eat 30-40min on each side every 1.5 hours, so I usually barely had 20min in between feedings. Once my milk came in I would unlatch her after 20min and switch sides, she would have probably kept suckin for hours if I left her. In the evening she would cluster feed for 3-4 hours nonstop. Now at 9 months PP, it takes 10min total every 3-4hours

    Before my milk came in, that sounded very similar to what I was doing. The more they suck, the more it triggers your body to make milk. Once my milk came in, both of my babies only nursed on one side for less than 20 minutes. My pedi told me anything over 20 minutes is just for comfort. There is no need to feed baby for an hour or more. After a couple of weeks, both were down to less than 10 minutes on a single side per feeding.

    Interesting- my milk came in today and our sessions have only been about 30min (20 min first side, 10 min second).  I am glad this sounds about right.  Thanks!
