C-sections

Repeat c-section or VBAC

I had an elective c section with baby no. 1 due to baby's size. The dr. said I could try natural but would more than likely end up with a ceasarean so I elected it. However, I am now due with baby 2 and have a few more weeks till the first appt. and was wondering do doctors seem to prefer repeat ceasareans or vbacs? Thank you for your input. I know ultimately this will be a discussion with my dr., but I am just curious of what I might hear.

It really depends on the doctor! I wanted a VBAC with my second, so I went to a MW practice that is known as being supportive (and successful) with VBAC moms.

If your doctor was skeptical of you being able to birth vaginally the first time, I would guess they won't be particularly in favor of VBAC. But if *you* are interested in it, definitely seek out someone who will truly be supportive of giving you every chance to VBAC.

And FWIW, one of the reasons I went for a VBAC was because I'm personally not comfortable of the risks associated with three c/s - I wanted to leave the option of having a third child open to me. hth and good luck!

  • It depends on the doctor  and the place where you want to deliver. While there are a lot of hospitals that will allow women to VBAC there are also a lot that will not allow it.

If you feel strongly about it make sure that you have a facility that completely supports your decision.

  • I agree with the above two posters. Discuss with your doc given your medical history and do some independent research. Some are very pro VBAC and I've seen on here places where they will not allow them under any circumstances.

For me I had a horrible induction and delivered vaginally with DD1, then DD2 was an emergency c section. I initially had a choice with DD3 and I was leaning towards a C section again. In my research I wasn't willing to chance the risks of a VBAC and felt a c section was more controlled for me. Ultimately DD3 was breech and my doc would not have allowed a VBAC anyway.

I think the most important thing is to review all your options and don't let a doc push you into one or the other. Make an informed decision and find a doc who will support you.
  • I was really sad that I had a c section with my first (breech) but when I got pregnant with my second, my doctor did not do VBACs. I have a very complicated family history when it comes to pregnancy and just didn't want to start over and go through it all with a new doctor so I went with the c section. The second section was much easier than the first and I will be having a third one in 2 months. I do have several friends who have had successful VBACs but it wasn't for me.
  • when I told my doctor I wanted RCS, she told me that's what she'd do too.   They would have let me try for a VBAC, but I have no desire to go through that again.
  • I was given the option to have a vbac after 2 previous csections. As others have said, it totally depends on your doctor. My ob was pushing more towards vbac for me, but because I wanted my tubes tied she agreed a section made more sense.
  • With my second baby, the Dr said it was up to me.  He told me the pros and cons of both, but I think he might have wanted me to have a Vbac ( although it is hard to say, he was very sublte and respectful).  I ended up choosing a RCS because I felt it was the best decision for me at the time.
  • As PPs said, it totally depends on the hospital and doctor.  I felt my practice was as neutral as possible when presenting me with the choice, only pointing out that if I wanted a large family (which I don't), I should try for a VBAC as the risks of an RCS increase with each pregnancy.  Also I had to sign a consent form either way, but the caveats of a VBAC seemed a little more intimidating.  I was pretty sure I wanted an RCS from the beginning but I think they would have supported my decision fully either way.

  • My dr was ok with me having a vbac however I ended up needing to deliver early due to other issues and I was not dialated at all so I had to have a csection.
