Toddler fell out of grocery cart...

So yesterday I took my 1 year old to the grocery store.  I strapped him in.  It was tight, but it's just one of those one strap things that go under their arms.  I keep an eye on him while I'm shopping.  Then, while in the checkout lane, I go to put the groceries onto the belt, he turns around and falls over into the cart side.  The strap left him dangling for a second, so I was able to catch him and hold him up while I waited for someone to help me unbuckle it.
What the hell?  What I am I supposed to do?  I mean the thing was tight ( I could barely get it around him and buckled).
Is there a product out there for little escape artists?

  • Yeah DS, also 1, is constantly standing on the seat or trying to lean over to reach the groceries. I just have to have a constant hand on him while I'm not looking.

My LO can wiggle out of the strap no matter how tight they are (worse yet, some stores don't even tighten nearly enough). When I am loading the cart, I keep a hand on him if I have to take my eyes off him, even for a second. To unload the cart at checkout, he will stand in the basket part and help load the belt, making it easier to keep a hand on him the entire time. If he isn't up for it, I hold him during checkout.
That's what I was thinking (putting him in the cart) but I can see people giving me the side eye if I tried this.
  • how scary - it sounds like you did everything you could. some of those cart belts just aren't positioned right. i agree w/ PP to try to keep a hand on him when you have to take your eyes off him, give him a toy to hold or snack to keep him occupied, or wear him. my guy's a little over 2 and he'll still try to stand up so i have to keep a hand on him

  • How about those grocery cart cover?.  Maybe the leg holes are smaller and he wouldn't be able to get his legs out of it on his own.
  • Ds fell out of the cart at target once.
He was closer to two, and he figured out how to un-do the buckle. I was reaching for something on the shelf and he unbuckled the strap and stood up and jump/fell out. He ended up hitting the bottom of the shelf/ground and cracked his tooth :(. He was fine but it scared the crap out of me! He walks with me most of the time now. He will hold on to the cart.
  • oh and i put DS in the big part of the cart if needed, and always when at check out so i know he cant run off. Also, if he is helping me load the groceries, he is to busy to noticed the M&M's in the check out line!

  • This might work!  https://thekangaboo.com/

My kid used to try to escape too. :(

  • It's a huge problem with DD has well. She's just now getting to the stage where she understands that she isn't supposed to, and behaves herself (sometimes...). All you can do is reinforce that it's a big no-no, and keep an eye on them as best you can. Also, depending on where you're shopping and what their carts are like, you could always put him in the cart section (as opposed to the seat). DD used to love that, and she'd just sit down and be cool with it. The sides of the carts are high enough at our local grocery store that she would never fall out. Now she tries to eat all the food though, so it's no longer an option, haha.

  • Eh, I think it just happens to the best of us. He was strapped in, what else can you do? I'm glad he was okay. He's not to little to reinforce safe cart riding.

Once, DD2 started hanging on the side of the cart and tipped the entire thing over w/ DD2 in the top. Cue two screaming kids splayed out on the floor in Trader Joe's and other customers giving me the evil eye.

Yeah this happened to me at Joann Fabrics- the manager would not STFU about filing an accident report- I just wanted to calm my kids I finally had to tell him to "back the fuck off"  I know he was freaking about me sueing them over this- it was not their fault I turned my back for a second and J tipped it over.
