Traveling bed safety

In two weeks my family will be traveling to visit my grandparents in CA. We are not bringing the pack n play because it's too cumbersome on the plane. That said, DS will just be sleeping in the bed with us. He usually sleeps in his crib and then at some point comes into our bed early in the morning when DH and I are on either side of him. Any way, he can be a pretty active sleeper, rolling around a lot. What can I do to keep him safe while he's sleeping in the bed without us (before we hit the hay or during naps). I was thinking of making a bed on the floor with sleeping bags and blankets, but I don't know if he will like this. DS is 16 months BTW.

Re: Traveling bed safety

  • It would be something else to buy, but have you thought about an inflatable toddler bed? They make aero-bed type things in toddler bed size. I know people who love the Pea Pod too for travel.
  • Loading the player...
  • Inflatable floor bed (we have one called "The Shrunks", it's on Amazon), or just make a floor bed with some blankets.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • This might not work because your son is 16 months old but I use a pool noodle (cut to size) under the fitted sheet to make bump so my DD can't roll off when we travel. It's a cheap solution since noodles are under $2. It works great for my 5 month old.
  • Or you could rent something (google it) or buy something cheap from Craigslist at your destination then donate it for a tax write off.
  • DS is 21 months, and when we are out of town (and don't have the bedrail) he sleeps between us. That way he won't risk rolling out of the bed. :)

I think OP is concerned about naps.

Lol, duh! Sorry, OP! Was reading too fast. ;)

PPs gave great suggestions. I love the pool noodle idea.

  • I will try pool noodles. I saw inflatable bumpers, but noodles seem like the same thing and way cheaper.
