Diaper change = end of the world

Sort of the S/O of the car seat thread... DS was having full on tantrums during more than half of his diaper changes this weekend. He's kind of hated diaper changes for awhile now, but the last few days he has been screaming and arching his back like I'm torturing him. I can usually get him to calm down by distracting him with questions ("Can you say, 'moo'?" "Where's your elbow?") but I'd rather he didn't have the screaming session in the first place. I always warn him a diaper change is coming, try to give him a treat or fun toy before getting on the table, and sometimes that works. Last night DH and I both had to wrestle with him for a changing! It's just no fun. :( Any tips?

Re: Diaper change = end of the world

  • I keep a couple of books on the dresser that I usually give to DS while I change him.  But there are times where that doesn't work and he screams, arches his back, kicks, etc.  Sometimes, I just let him arch and kick for a little bit (he usually stops after like 15 seconds when he gets no resistance, and I obviously make sure that he can't hurt himself or fall off the dresser or anything) and then he settles down long enough for a quick change.

He did go through a pretty rough stretch where he would scream and cry through pretty much every diaper change.  I just tried to be as quick as possible and if I could have someone else with me to try to entertain or distract him, I would.  Also, I tried to start distracting him before I even laid him down on the changing pad (singing to him as I walked into the room, or asking him questions or something) and occasionally if he was distracted before the change even started, it would be over before he realized what was going on!  Hope things settle down soon!

Us, too. This sounds absolutely terrible, but I lay him down on the floor and throw my leg over his chest (not putting weight on him but making more of a cage so he can't scoot up or down). Then I say "You'd better not tickle me! Don't tickle me!" and 90% of the time, he accepts this as a challenge to tickle my kneecap. I act like I'm crazy ticklish and he keeps going while I speed through the change. For the most part, for pee diapers, I use Slip Ons so all I have to do it get them around his ankles, unclasp the old one and yank the new one up, which we can do from a standing position. This is much less stressful on everyone.

    Toddlers. What a circus!
  • Our conversation goes like this after I smell something.

    Me: Hey, did you poop?
    Alexander: (Rolls eyes) Noooooo.
    Me: Are you sure?
    Alexander: Sure.
Me: Are you lying to mama?

Then he runs like the wind. Even though I'm being lied to, at least he knows that he went. Hopefully that's a good first step in potty training.

  • Thanks for the tips! I've been changing him on the floor more often and he's a bit more agreeable for that. Also givin him a new toy or something right before, letting him help with wiping, acting silly, askin where his body parts are... Tryin pretty much everything and it's been better. Thanks again!
  • And apparently my phone doesn't like the letter "g", lol I'm not talking with a twang or anything. :D
