So close! Only half an ounce more...

S has been always been a tiny kiddo and dropped a whole bunch right at the beginning so our pedi has been monitoring her weight gain like a hawk. Last Friday we went in for her 3 month check and I was excited because I was sure she had finally reached 10 lbs. NOPE. She had only gained 5 oz over 2 weeks, so we had to keep track of how much she ate over the weekend and come back in yesterday. Thankfully she gained 3 oz over the three days, so we don't have to come back in again until her 4 month at which point we'll evaluate her weight gain and determine if blood work is necessary. She's right on the verge of finally becoming a double digit baby so hopefully she'll gain that last half an ounce today!

Anyone else having issues with babies who aren't gaining weight? I feel like I'm the only one and I have no idea what I can do to help her!

Oh my word yes! I thought I was the only one too! At 3.5 months, she is 10.2 pounds EBF. I have a friend who's baby is 6 weeks younger EBF and he is already 10 pounds! Started at 5.5. It's sometimes discouraging to see all these babies gaining weight so fast. I'm happy for them! It's just nice to know I'm not the only one with a slow gainer :-)

Yep. Going in today for a weight check. I think she's finally hit 10 lbs. She's 13 weeks today and was 7.1 at birth. It's been a long battle to get that weight on but I've also been stubborn about only doing BM. Hoping for thumbs up from the doc.
Good luck at your appointment today! I hope she's gaining the weight!

S gets about half her intake from formula since I can only produce about half of what she normally eats in a day, so her lack of gain I'm quite sure has nothing to do with my stubbornness. I can only hope that she keeps gaining between now and her next appointment because I don't want to have to poke her even more to draw blood on top of her shots!

Are your pedis offering any suggestions to get your LOs to eat more?

  • Congrats on getting so close! That must be tough. G had a week where he didn't gain even a 10th if an ounce, and I was really worried, so I imagine it's pretty darn stressful when it's a constant battle.

I hope today is your double digit day!
  • Good luck. J has been a bit slower to gain than some. At his 2 month he was 11 lbs 11 oz. he was 9 lbs 2 oz at birth so while higher numbers, not a huge increase. He was 50th percentile for weightz, 75th for height. We are ebf.

  • Our LO is also a peanut. She weighed in at 10lbs on Monday, she is 3 months today. She's only in the 5th percentile in weight but 50th for height; however she's gaining a steady 5oz per week and is on target to double her birth weight by 5 months. She was 6.2 at birth and 5.60z 4 days after birth.
The average weight gain is 5-7oz per week. May I ask what your LO's BW was? Is it at least averaging 5oz weekly, per month?

  • Try not to worry, hard I know. Some weeks my LO gained an ounce! They told me to try and give her an extra ounce in a bottle after each feed. I tried but when she's full she's full. You could maybe consider that.

Her weight gain seems to fluctuate so we still manage to stay within her centile which is all I want. I don't want huge gains or any losses.

My LO just hit 10lbs as of Monday. She gained 10 oz in 2 weeks. We have been going to a gastrointestinal nutritionist doctor since she's been about 5 or 6 weeks old. We have to write down what and when she eats. He also changed her formula to water ratio. This was the first time in a 2 week span that she gained more then 1 or 2 ounces. We had to switch to a bigger bottle and I feel she thinks she can eat a lot more which is good.
So you are not alone. I'm right there with you and all of you other ladies!

S started out at 5lb 14oz at birth and dropped to 5lb 2oz five days after. She's 15 weeks as of Sunday so assuming she got to 10lbs yesterday, she gained a little over 4 lbs total. I think that's averaging out to about 4.5 oz a week...
