Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Feedback on nap/sleep schedule for 3 month old

Hi all,

My daughter just turned 3 months old. She's doing great and is very big/healthy!

Her schedule lately is roughly like this:

6.30 AM - awake-ish but stays in crib happily enough
7 AM - up and feed
8.15 - 9.00 AM nap 1
10.30 AM - 12.00 PM nap 2 (this is the only nap where she'll do more than 45 mins. I still have to 'interfere' to help her get into the next sleep cycle by giving her a pacifier, etc
1.45 - 2.30 PM nap 3
4.30 - 5.15 PM nap 4 (this is the toughest nap to get her to go down for)
6.30 PM bedtime (goes down easily)
10 PM dreamfeed - just started adding this so I feed her at 3.45 AM instead of 2 AM
12.30 AM wakes crying - give pacifier and/or change
2 AM wakes crying - give pacifier and/or change
3.45 Feed

I should add I am exclusively breastfeeding.

So a few questions I'd LOVE advice on
- Should I try to get her to three naps a day instead of four?
- How is best to try to move away from the night feeding or is that just totally unrealistic? Of course she's too young for CIO, etc
- Any views on why only her second nap is longer?

Thanks so much!!

Re: Feedback on nap/sleep schedule for 3 month old

  • Well, first off at 3 months she is to young to eliminate a night time feed. She is waking up because she is hungry, so do not drop that till she is ready. She will let you know when she is ready. At 3 months, if I remember right I was still just going by sleep cues. I was watching for fussiness and eye rubbing, she never made it past 2 hours for awake time usually. She is really young to try to put on a schedule in my opinion. Babies do love repetition so keep at it if you want to get her used to that. My DD is just now starting to put herself on a schedule at over 4 months old. All babies are different, it doesn't stay like that forever :)

  • my DS will be 4 months next week. I am EBF and when he cries at night, I just automatically feed him. It doesnt take long because 1) he's doing it to help soothe himself back to sleep and 2)because he's hungry.

just my 2 cents but dont offer the paci

and as far as naps, just follow her cues. if she needs a 4th nap, let her. if she only needs 3 one day, then so be it. not everyday is going to be the exact same.
  • I don't think you can expect a really solid schedule at 3 months.  And I definitely wouldn't be trying to cut back on naps.  Babies need to sleep when they are tired.  DS takes 4-5 naps a day anywhere from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours, and he is rarely awake more than 90 minutes. (And he only does one longer nap a day like your LO.)  He is very consistent at night though - sleeps 7 p.m.-6:30 a.m., and usually wakes once to nurse between 1:30 and 3:30 a.m.

I don't really think DS#1 got on a consistent nap schedule until he was 4-5 months old.  And he was a terrible sleeper at night from day 1 until about day 365!  So I really think that just depends on the baby.

  • we didn't get 3 naps until 3.5 months and dropped to 2 nap by 5 months.  didn't wake up in MOTN after 8 weeks (except for a few random growth spurt days)
