Wwyd-rolling in sleep

DD hasn't really mastered rolling from belly to back. She's only done it a handful of times. Yesterday morning she started rolling back to belly either in her sleep or while trying to fall asleep. She hates tummy time so she will do this then start grunting and then crying until I go flip her back over. I was up about 10 or more times last night to flip her. Not sure what to do to stop her from flipping.

Re: Wwyd-rolling in sleep

  • When DS was swaddled, he couldn't roll. Have you tried swaddling her? DS easily rolls when he's in a sleep sack though.. It was only the swaddle that would stop him.

  • Our LO was doing the same thing the other night.  She would roll onto her side once I put her in the swaddle sleepsack (with one arm out), and get stuck on her arm so not all the way onto her belly ... but it was enough to keep me up all night checking on her.
  • Dd was swaddled and grew out of it, was flipping on to her tummy and screaming for almost a month after we stopped swaddling, but now she likes to tummy sleep and roll all over the place. She sleeps longer too
  • Wow I was just about to post this same thing lol. DS is sleeping now and just rolled. Crossing my fingers he stays sleeping!

  • LO has done this when she's escaped from her sleep suit. I figured either she'll start getting strong enough to roll to her back on command or will get over it. but we're going to try and nix the suit once she's done teething right now for her naps.

  • She has never been swaddled. She always hated it. The closest thing was the sleep sac for the first couple months but arms were always out. Sometimes she will sleep on her belly but not for very long. She just seems so restless since she started rolling. It's like she's trying to get in a certain position and can't do it.

She's also rolling into the sides of the crib. Sometimes she gets her legs and arms in between the bars. She's also hit her head on the bars. I know apa says no bumpers but do any of you use them? If so, what type and do they help?

  • My dd sleeps in a sleepsack. I would always roll her back over when she rolled onto her belly before she mastered going back over.  I did that because she would either freak our or because I was worried that she would smother herself.  That lead to about 1 week of no sleep for me.  Thankfully, she learned quickly and so I slowly started leaving her.  She has excellent control over her neck and head so I am no longer worried about when she rolls.  I do check the monitor to make sure she isn't face down but so far she has always had hear head turned to the side.
