Period and BFing question.

Sorry if this has been discussed already. With DS I never got my period until after I was done nursing him (I also never went back on any kind of birth control during that time). This time I got the Mirena at 6 weeks pp. I think I got my first pp period this weekend (I assume that's what it is, it's very light but lots of cramps like before being pregnant). Anyway I'm just wondering if or how getting your period affected your BFing relationship. I noticed DD has been nursing a lot more the last few days, including once during the night that she wasn't doing before.

I've only gotten one period so far when DS was 2 months. He didn't want to nurse that much. My OB and his pedi both said its because a women's milk taste different when she's menstrating.

  • I've had two periods since LO's birth (lucky me). The first one coincided with a growth spurt, so lots of nursing. The second was normal amount of nursing sessions. My supply dropped a bit (normal), so I made a conscious effort to stay hydrated. My nips were a little more sensitive too, which wasn't exactly pleasant. So overall it didn't really affect the nursing relationship much, but there were a couple noticeable effects.
  • I've been getting my period since 4 or 5 weeks PP every 20-25 days (yeah, it sucks). Sonya nurses maybe a little more frequently when I'm menstruating, and it feels like I don't have as much milk as usual, but other than that, I haven't noticed many differences.

I've had my mirena since June 6th and have had 3 periods. I honestly haven't noticed a difference in supply or his nursing habits while I'm menstruating.

  • I've also had 2 periods... No differences. If anything my supply is better at that time, which makes no sense!
