I was talking to my pedi about how I started giving dd kefir with breakfast and she told me its not too tough to make homemade. Anyone have a good recipe?
DH makes it. He is at work but I'll ask him when he gets home and report back if no one gives you a good recipe!
Or maybe once DS and DD wake up (they are BOTH napping on me- I'm an awesome mattress) I'll go see if I can find the recipe. It may be in his cheese making cabinet.
You can order the starter online, or if you can find someone IRL who has some, that works too. Basically, you have to change out the milk-turned-kefir every 24 hours, bc the culture converts it so quickly. But the strained kefir keeps in the fridge awhile, and you can keep making more indefinitely.
I prefer yogurt - I just don't like the taste of kefir, and I think it's harder to maintain/keep making constantly.
I've been making kefir for about 5 months now. It's really pretty easy! We ordered the kefir grains, then you add milk to them, and let it sit for 12-24 hours, depending on the amount you're making. After it's done, I blend frozen fruit, spinach, and a little honey into ours. It's yummy! We all have a glass every morning; my 1 and 2 year olds both love it. I also like to use kefir in baking.
We got our grains here - https://kefirlady.com/ It came with a booklet on how to make, and lots of recipes/uses.

Re: Does anyone make homemade kefir?
