Nervous- First Vaccines Tomorrow

Ok Team May Babies- we have our first round of vaccines tomorrow (our doc has been on vacation) and I am SO NERVOUS! Specifically- what if LO has a bad reaction, or what if she sleeps all day and we can't get her to eat anything, or how will we know if we should take her to the hospital if the vaccine makes her unwell?!?

Am I over-worrying? The language barrier here in Germany makes things like this all the more stressful. I'm "what if-ing" myself into a tizzy. What were your vaccinations like?

Yes you are over-worrying. You watch for a temp of 104.5 I was told. If she sleeps and doesn't wake up to eat much for one day she will be just fine.

He cried for about 30 seconds until I nursed him, and his temp was high 99s for the next 2 days. He never showed soreness or anything else.

Honestly, the shots were SO fast. The nurses are amazing. It was boom, boom, boom and I had him in my arms. He gets way more angry when he's hungry than he did about the shots. Once I was holding him, he calmed right down and I had a bottle all ready to go. I was very worried and at the last minute I had to go without my husband but it was totally fine. I'm not exactly looking forward to Round 2 next week but I know I'm much more equipped to handle it.

He slept most of the day after the shots so we're doing this second batch in the late afternoon. He was not as happy as normal for most of the weekend after (did them on a Friday morning) but it wasn't a huge deal. He fussed and cried on Saturday night for 15 minutes or so like he was hurting so we gave him the dosage of Tylenol that our pedi recommended and he was fine after that. The cry was just different, which is what makes me feel like he might have been in a little pain. You know your baby best so you'll know if something is really wrong enough to go to the ER.

I think it's 100 times harder on us than it is on the babies.

J cried when they did it and then for a bit after. He fell asleep as soon as we started driving. He was really fussy and one leg swelled slightly at the injection spot, so we gave him some Tylenol the first night. He was fine the next day.

First set (8 weeks) she got a mild temperature (37.5 celsius taken under armpit). She slept quite a bit but fed well.

Second set (12 weeks) she slept and fed a lot. No temp this time.

She definitely handled the second set of jabs a lot better. It was easier to console her. Plus with her first jabs it was as if she kept recalling the pain because every couple of hours she would cry for a couple of minutes then calm down when I held her.

They handle them much better than you can imagine. when she got her jabs I nursed her immediately to soothe her on both occasions and that really calmed her and stopped her tears quite quickly.

They're amazing little things. Good luck and don't worry. I cried the first time but the second time I handled it better too

DD cried a lot during the shots, but as soon as we left, she fell asleep. She got her shots in the morning & when we got home, she slept most of the day except for waking up to eat. It didn't effect her nighttime sleeping, though. I did give her some Tylenol, too. Good Luck!

My pedi gave dd the shots. She cried for 30 seconds, no real tears and stopped when I picked her up. No fever at all. She was fussier than usual. We think she had a little soreness where she was stuck with the needles but nothing bad. No tears for me either.

My LO cried when it was happening, but was asleep in the car a few minutes later. She was okay for a couple hours but then I think the pain set in and she was screaming-- not gonna lie. I cried right along with her! We gave her Tylenol and she settled down and fell asleep for the night.

The next day she was totally fine, but slept a LOT. Like, a 5 hour midday nap. But she didnt cry at all or act like she was in pain. She never had a temp and I checked often.

Good luck! It sucks but it's a necessary evil. You will both get through it!

This exactly for his 2 and 4 months.much better than I expected. Good luck!

My LO one cried a little but I nursed him right away and that seemed to help. He did scream for two hours straight that eveing and wouldn't eat at all and was running a fever it was hard to watch and I cried with him. Tylenol did the trick though and he slept all night. The next day he seemed fine and was back to his usuall happy self. But it seems most babies just sleep a lot so don't let me scare you, we just happened to have a bad experience. She cried when she got the needles, but calmed down and went to sleep. She played and laughed for a while, went down for a nap and then woke screeching an hour later. Her legs were red like a sunburn. She screamed for 2 hours, puked up a bottle I tried to feed her then fell asleep and cried in her sleep for another 2 hours. Gave her a tiny bit of Tylenol and she settled down. She was back to herself by evening and slept just fine. It was a rough day. I'm not telling you this to scare you, but to tell you that even if it's bad it will be ok.

It wasn't that bad. I am a huge wimp too! M cried for 30 seconds, then I nursed her and she was happy for a couple hours. She did wake up in the middle of her nap, screaming, about 5 hours later with swollen thighs and a fever of right around 100 that lasted two days. I couldn't stand her feeling pain so gave baby Tylenol, as doctor said was permitted, for the next 24 hours and she was much better within an hour and back to normal within the next 5 or 6 hours.
