Reflux

New here and hope this is a place I can find someone who understands what I am going through! Although I have a very supportive family they tend to think I am just being a first time mom and worrying about everything. DS has been on Zantac since he was two weeks old - he is now 12 weeks. I feel like i am always at the doctors office to get his perscription increased as his symptoms keep getting worse. Today she said we should try prevacid. I am open to trying anything but he has also been constipated (his normal is every 5-7 days and my doctor doesn't seem to think this is a problem although I do) and I understand Prevacid can make this worse. My doctor has no kids and she seems to laugh off many of his symtoms. I am following my instincts here but screaming through feedings, waking up in pain and I have come to fear burping him as he is so hysterical is not normal behavior - right??? I have asked to see a specialist and suggested we look at allergies but she always brushes it off as no big deal. Am I overreacting? Should I try the prevacid? Where I live we can't just switch doctors and finding one who will take a new patient is almost impossible.

Sorry for the ramble...

Re: Reflux

  • C is on prevacid and it seems to be working great. She doesn't have any constipation and is doing SO much better with feedings now. I've definitely heard that Zantac can become less effective over time a require larger and larger doses, which is why my doc prescribed prevacid right off the bat. I think it's worth a shot if the reflux symptoms are getting worse!

  • I agree with PP.  I've heard a lot about kids outgrowing their zantac dose and building up an intolerance; and I've heard this straight from the mouth of a PICU intensivist I work with.  I'd give the Prevacid a try.  Sorry your doctor seems to be blowing you off.  Screaming through feedings, etc is not normal and I think you should keep pressing until you get a plan you are comfortable with. As for the bowel movements - is baby breastfed?  If so it is normal to have fluctuations and go spaced apart. Unless your baby seems uncomfortable with it!

  • Oh and also, My LO is on prilosec for reflux. As far as allergies; workups can be difficult for LO to endure depending on allergists prefernce for treatment.  Does your LO ever have rashes, screaming not during feeds, blood in stool or other signs?  If you breast feed you could limit some of the top allergens.  Again if you are breastfeeding; limiting dairy, caffeine, chocolate, sauces will help with reflux symptoms!  HTH.

  • Thanks for the reassurance that I am not crazy! He is taking as much breast milk as I can produce which is about 10-15 ounces per day and I supplement with formula. I try to be rational and think that allergies are highly unlikely but some days I question everything. I will pick up the prevacid tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. If there still is no change in a week or two I will be pushing for a pediatrician who is more familiar with these issues.

He doesn't get rashes or blood but some days it looks like a lot of mucous in his bm and he can wake up several times screaming during his naps for a few minutes then falls back asleep. I know this will eventually end its just hard to watch and not be able to help.

I'm so sorry. :( I know how it feels. My dd was going through the same things, I'd call the pedi to get an appt and she would just tell me over the phone to switch formula. I noticed that many of dd's symptoms were in line with a cows milk protein intolerance. Finally we had success with Nutramigen, but dd was still having reflux and pain when eating. I called pedi again and (without even an office visit, but per my request) she prescribed Prevacid to my LO. She's been on the combination of Nutramigen and Prevacid for 3 days now and she is like a new baby! She still spits up, but it doesn't seem to be painful to her and no more projectile vomiting.

Edit to add: Before the switch to Nutramigen , my dd started having trouble pooping. Constipation or diarrhea can be symptoms of a milk intolerance. If you are BFing , maybe try eliminating dairy from your diet. Otherwise maybe talk to pedi about a hypoallergenic formula. DD has show nothing but improvement in the last few days and is no longer constipated at all, even on the Prevacid.

  • My DS had been on Nexium for over two months now. It has really helped his reflux, fussiness, and crying. I've also been dairy free since he was 2 weeks old and soy free for a few weeks now, and have seen an improvement. Have you tried modifying your diet in conjunction with different formulas? It won't happen overnight, but you'll know whether or not helps in no later than 2 weeks.

It's really hard to see your LO in pain. I'd try the Prevacid and discuss the diet/formula change with your pedi. Sounds like a different pedi wouldn't hurt if you can find one. Good luck.
