how clingy is your LO?

DS (13 months) goes to DC and seems very content to play by himself there. But when he is home, he needs constant attention. He would not play by himself for more than a few minutes. He doesn't need us to actively play with him, but he gets upset if we are not sitting by him and paying attention.

On one hand, since we work FT, I feel guilty that he doesn't get to spend much time with us during the day so we feel like we should focus purely on him when we are home; but on the other hand, we would like to get stuff done around the house from time to time, especially on weekends.

He was better before, this only started happening in the past few weeks.

  • We're not quite in the same boat, but similar.  I think it's part of the separation anxiety phase.  We just do our best to bring him into wherever we are.  I may not be able to fully focus on him (for example when I'm folding clothes or getting dinner ready), but I'll bring him into the room with me and keep an eye on him while he entertains himself.

  • I posted something similar last week.  My LO is very clingy.  He basically needs to be held or I need to be sitting right next to him while he plays the entire night or he cries.  If I set him down to play, he cries and crawls over to me and climbs up my leg.  It is nearly impossible to get anything done.  I'm just trying to be patient and keep in mind that at some point he is going to want to be away from mommy so I should treasure it LOL.

  • Oops, sorry, hit "post reply" too fast - MaggieF516: that sounds exactly like my DS, minus the being held part.  DS doesn't like being held, never have.  We have an open floor plan so it bothers me that he can't even let me be a few feet away from him preparing dinner/cleaning up without whining and crying.
  • Our DD is very clingy on Monday mornings. My mom watches DD at our house 4 days a week, so as soon as my Mimi walks in the door, lo comes running to me. Other than that she likes to play by herself. When I come home from work she likes to cuddle for a little bit and then she is off, running around the house and playing with the dog. Maybe we just haven't hit the clingy stage yet.
  • my son went through a phase like this. i started leaving for short periods and showing him that i'd come back. it took awhile. he's always played great on his own, but would get upset if i was in a different room. i alternate between playing w/ him and reading to him, with reading a magazine or book of my own.

it was only when he hit about 20 months that he started leaving a room i was in to play somewhere else and even now he'll sometimes follow me out if i leave.
