Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Not eating the old tried and true foods?

My son is almost 14 months and over the past week he has gone from eating all of his favorite foods, pasta, cheese, banana, etc to only wanting to eat crackers and pureed food at home??  He stayed home with me for the first year and this is going on his 3rd full week of day care after I went back to work.  He reportedly eats really well at dc, eating things he doesn't even normally eat at home...what gives??  Anyone else go through this around this age?  Its driving me insane! We went from calm, quiet suppers where baby eats what he is supposed to, to chaotic, stressful meals.

Re: Not eating the old tried and true foods?

  • Not quite to that extreme but foods LO liked when I first introduced like carrots and green beans, now she won't eat. I take it she's tried lots more flavors now and realizes I'd been holding out the good stuff. So in comparison to say a cheese & chicken quesadilla carrots/green beans don't really shine. Another time she wouldn't eat cantaloupe, the very next day she downed a whole bunch. Go figure. Toddlers- enough said :)

  • 1. He's dealing w/ a lot of changes w/ going to daycare.

    2. You have a toddler. They don't do anything they're "supposed" to.
LOL All this.  If he's eating well at daycare, don't sweat dinner too much.

  • I have found that my little guy (13 months) does things at home that he doesn't do at daycare and vice versa. Honestly, I'd probably just offer him what you'd normally offer him for dinner at home. Let him eat what he will (even if that's little to nothing) and try not to sweat it. If he's hungry, he'll eat. The stress at mealtime isn't good for anyone. I'd try not to worry too much assuming he's eating well at daycare. Maybe he's just simply not hungry at dinnertime? The less you stress about it, I'd imagine the less of an issue it'll be. It's probably just a phase :)
  • Same thing with DS. He used to love yogurt and oatmeal but now he barely touches either. I think he is just going through a phase.
  • Thanks everyone!!
  • My son does the same...eats really well at daycare and clears his plate...veggies and all.  At home it's hit or miss.  Also, I notice he gets really finicky with what food he wants to eat when he starts a teething spree.  It's one of my first clues.  He'll only eat purees or soft fruits for the couple of weeks the tooth is coming in. Could it be related to that?
