February 2013 Moms

Any other mama's going back to school?

I spent the whole day running errands and out at the local community college getting registered for classes and what not. Everything starts next week. I have blown it at this college thing twice already so I'm scared shitless of going back. I haven't tried college since I was 20 or so. Now I'm going back but fully online so I don't have to be away from baby for work and school. I'm just so scared I'm gonna blow it again with a family this time. Aaaaah. I'm not exactly going back with a light load either. To keep from paying out of pocket I'm taking 14 credits so I am a full time student and get the full pell grant. Anyone else staring down the barrel of returning to school and mommyhood?

  • I'm going back to school as a teacher, but I really just wanted to respond to commend you! I think it's really terrific that you're going back to school. I'm sure it will be challenging, but I also think it will bring great rewards. My mom went back to college when I was 11. She had only done a year or so when she was younger. She went on to earn 2 degrees and I really admire her for that and I'm sure your LO will admire you too! I sincerely wish you the best of luck!! You can do it Mama!!!

  • I'm not going back at all, but I also wanted to wish you luck! I think it's great that you're doing that. What kinds of classes are you taking?

  • I'm going for the medical secretary program (my current town is one of the largest medical centers in the world) so this semester is generals (history of music, psychology, interpersonal comm) and one core course physiology and pharmacology.

  • I've decided to finally get my butt in gear and finish. I just have a few credits left before I can apply to nursing school. I kept putting it off because I wasn't ready to go back to school but if I had had enough discipline, I'd be 4 years post college! Ugh!

  • You can do it! Have faith in yourself. I went back to school when my dd was 2.5. I graduated with my bachelors in April last year. I'm scheduled to finish my masters degree in January 2014. Best decision i ever made!

  • I wanted to wish you luck too! I was considering going back this semester, but I still can't decide what for, so I decided I will reevaluate for the spring semester. I hopefully am dropping some time at work in January, so theoretically will have more time. A good friend of mine keeps offering to send me to school to be a pharmacist, as long as I work for him, but I feel like I can't work at all I do that. plus, I also want to home school my kids, so I hope to not be working at all by then, so I then wonder why bothEr? I can't make my mind up. Errr. I already have a ton of course that add up to nothing, since I changed majors about 8 different times.
  • Power to school mama's you ladies are so inspirational. I put off going back until after the baby. I don't really care what I'm going for right now I just want to get to a career so my SO can go back to school. He actually wants to go to school but also blew it so I'm going back so I can support us and he can go to school for nursing. Baby lady really put things in perspective.

  • That's great news! I'm sure it will be stressful, but I bet it will be well worth it in the end, and now you have a great motivation to continue!
FWIW, I'm still in school working on my terminal degree, and I hope to be done in the winter/spring. It's not easy, but the scholarship I have has made things work really well for us. I feel scared because I'm just now applying for "real" jobs and will hopefully start working this fall (I can finish my degree while working PT). So I'm on the other side of things :-)

  • I'm with you. I just quit my job so I could finish my degree. I had been working full time and taking 2 classes a semester but I've decided I can't do that and raise my daughter alone. I'd like to see her some time! LOL. The scariest part for me is the loss of income. I'm maxing out my student loans this semester but I am worried it won't be enough.

  • I just received a masters in special education. Full time work + grad school + a newborn almost did me in but we manage to find the energy somewhere, don't we?

Good luck, mama.  I think it is awesome that you are going back to school. :)
