Since we have lots of travelers here, and a good handful in the process of losing weight.. Those that do both, do you watch what you eat on vacations? Or do you splurge? Or kinda find a balance?
I absolutely watch what I eat. That's just how we live... moderate, healthful eating, with the occasional indulgence. That doesn't change when my location is different. When we travel, we tend to try new restaurants, cuisines, etc, so my calorie-count is likely higher than when at home, but I definitely don't give myself the green light to go ahead and indulge.
Most of vacations involve tons of walking so I usually indulge! I have never gained weight on a vacation. I hear cruises usually come with a 10 pound gain lol!
I watch what I eat, but do eat more than I would at home. The problem for me tends to be alcohol-I drink a lot more on vacation. I always make sure to work out when I am on vacation though.
I dont watch what i eat on vacation. But its not like i would be eatting fried chicken and french fries every night. I like healthier things in general. But ill have dessert more or more carbs or whatever. But no i do not think twice about what i eat, i eat whatever i want. Pretty much on vacation (our big one) everything goes right out the window. No rules
We never stop during vacations, so I am nowhere near as careful as I am at home. But, like pp, I tend to just like more healthful food, so I stick with that mostly, with some indulgences (like Maryland crab cakes, they're my vice).
We really only go on vacation once a year during the summer. I don't really care about watching what I eat. We go to New England in the summer. I love all the homemade ice cream places, so we definitely indulge in a lot of ice cream. We don't have ice cream like that where I live. Oh, and lobster rolls and clam chowder. Gotta have it! Wouldn't be right without it
We just got back from vacationing in Cape Cod, and yes, I did indulge. But, I knew I was starting WW when I got home. We ate a lot of fried clams and soft serve but my other meals were pretty normal. For me it really depends on where we are vacationing.
I was curious because I had a friend who was on an 8 day vacation and just got back, she sent me a text saying she gained 10 pounds.. I was like whaaaat! lol.. so it got me curious as to how people eat on vacation.
I splurge, too.. but I can't splurge like I used to. I seriously think my stomach has shrunk. When we went to NYC, I always left half my food each meal. So even if I splurge a bit, it's still half. And I make it a balance. And we walk SO much on ANY vacation, that I just don't gain. If I do, it's like a pound.. 2 max.
i definitely indulge more than at home, especially for foods specific to a city/restaurant/culture. so then i try to eat healthier for other meals and any snacks. i don't really weigh myself (i've convinced myself that it's never really accurate w/ water weight, food, etc. lol) but i stay about the same. however i almost always notice that my legs are more toned just because we walk so much, and pretty much everywhere has more hills and stairs than we have at home.
on our honeymoon cruise, the jeans i wore on day 1 were uncomfortably snug on day 7 - that really, really sucked! and we were super active, it's all that darn food!
I splurge and have definitely come home with five pound weight gain. I don't lose sleep about gaining a little weight though. It comes off with exercise and healthy eating.
We haven't done any traveling since I really started working at losing weight, but I have thought about what I would do. Usually I'm all about indulging. Vacations for us usually involve a lot of swimming and walking, so I'm more active than I usually am. I think I would probably eat like I typically do for breakfast and then maybe loosen up a little for lunch, but be contentious about it, and then eat whatever I wanted for dinner. I think it would all balance out. Also, even if I did indulge and eat whatever I wanted for a week it's not like I could REALLY do that much damage, especially considering the extra activity. I think it could/would be more of an issue if you traveled frequently though, for sure. Then I would probably indulge less, but I would probably feel better about indulging less because it would be as "once in a long time" sort of thing.
I typically indulge but it depends on the type of vacation. For example: at DH's family cottage I don't do a ton more physical activity than I do at home so I only indulge a little. At Disney I am on my feet 24/7 and can eat garbage for a week and still maintain/lose weight so I eat whatever I want...one time I ordered a salad at WDW and it was the worst thing I had while on vacation so I learned my lesson.

me too we do tend to stay at places where we can make our own breakfast and dinners if we want to so that helps. I hate the feeling of eating out 3 meals every day for a week or more. We were in CO for 10 days last month. I weighed myself when we came back and I had lost 1 pound, so I'm not concerned about a vacation killing my goals.
